We have just had some colourful postcards printed and would like to share them.
We slip them into library books and books in second-hand shops (as if they were forgotten bookmarks) in the hope that someone will find them and be intrigued enough to look at the website.
It’s quiet, easy, pleasant activism and who knows where it might lead?
The trick is not to get over enthusiastic and put too many in one place in one go. If a staff member spots them they will probably just throw them away, and may even check for more in other books. But if the occasional one is found by a library user, they might enjoy it, keep it as a bookmark, and one day be curious enough to visit us here.
So, we thought it would be doubly exciting if we could get these out and about in other places around the country, even around the world, and if you’d like to join in you’d be more than welcome.
We have 500 of these babies in our possession and would be glad to send a few to anyone who contacts us asking for some. So let us know – are you feeling sneaky? 😀

We are not fully raw; we still enjoy cooked potatoes, and lentils; we have rolled oats for breakfast; we eat tofu. But we do include as much raw as we can in our diet and it makes us feel great. Energised. I love juicing fruits and greens and making them into ice pops. I love frozen bananas instead of shop-bought ice cream. I love raw, and semi-raw cakes and treats which contain no sugar or added sweetener, and no gluten, are actually good for me, and yet make me feel indulgent as they are superior in taste and feel-good factor to traditional sugar-laden sweets. I am excited about all the new things I have learned this year about raw foods and how good they make me feel and I am grateful to so many people who have shared their experiences so that I can learn more.
One of these people is Kristina Carrillo-Bucaram, better known as FullyRawKristina
This lady is a positive inspiration, and though many of us may not be in a position to live as she does – such large quantities organic fresh produce are very expensive – we can each do as much as we can within our own means and feel better for it. For example, I have found that when I tried to be fully raw I got too skinny and simply wasn’t eating enough. Now that I compromise by adding cooked potatoes and lentils, for example, to my raw fruit and veggies, I feel great, am back to my normal weight and still getting a very nutritious diet. I love this video because Kristina encourages us to look at her example, and take from it what works for us. It’s all about experimenting until we get it right and being our own best, our own happiest, in our own way.
It seemed appropriate to leave this one ’til now because inevitably people will start thinking ahead to Christmas once September gets here. And really, Big Blue Sky is a pre-Christmas story as opposed to a Christmas story because, since people tend to order their turkeys early, if they’re buying direct from the farmer, it would be good if they read this beforehand.

When Emily was 8 and Eve was 5, Emily said one day, while we were eating tea,
“Eve uses words that even I don’t know.”
And Eve replied, “Yes, like tonsillitis.”
Emily said, “No, I mean real words, not made up ones.”
My husband and I smiled at each other and assured Emily that tonsillitis was a real word.
“Yes, it’s a dinosaur.” Eve agreed.
Once when we were on holiday, Eve was only a baby and Emily must have been about 4 years old, we were in a public toilets, washing our hands, when another lady came in.
Emily said to her, with genuine interest, “Are you a vegetarian?”
The lady replied, “No, I’m afraid not.”
Emily thought for a moment and then said, “Nanny ate fish once but she didn’t mean it.”
My children were brought up vegetarian from birth but when they were very young I didn’t make a fuss about gelatine in sweets that were given to them by other people. However, one day when they were choosing some sweets at the corner shop after school, I decided to explain to them what gelatine was after they’d both chosen sweets containing it. Emily, who was 7 years old then, immediately returned the sweets to the shelf and chose some without gelatine.
I turned to Eve, who was only 4, and asked her “Do you want to change yours or are you not old enough to understand?”
She looked thoughtfully at her sweets and then at me and said,
“I don’t think I’m old enough to understand.”
Thus she made the difficult decision to quit gelatine another day 😉
Two days later …
We thought we’d keep a record of where we’d left a calling card.

These veggies have had some arguments.
One group says it is better than another.
The potatoes, the carrots and the radishes insisted they were the best.

We just found this wonderful video on Youtube. It has subtitles but it’s only 2 and a half minutes long so please watch it. Such a beautiful little boy 🙂
I was just browsing other people’s blogs when I came across this post, titled ‘Napping on a shoulder under a collar’ on Rethinking Life. It reminded me of the little house marten that my daughter rescued ten years ago because this bird also used to take a nap on her shoulder under her collar. He/she was a pretty little thing who touched our lives briefly and then flew away. Here’s a couple of pics of Eve (my daughter) with Minnie (her house marten friend):

All this week I’ve been in denial about my dissatisfaction with Where are you going Deidra? I was so excited about finishing it, and I’d set myself a target of the end of last week, that I didn’t pause to think about whether it really was finished. I was so focussed on getting across the message about the true cost of dairy farming, that I temporarily lost sight of my primary intention – to provide happy, positive, vegan inspiration for children, not to depress them. I think it’s ok for me to put more serious, grown up items on the blog occasionally, and I think it’s important to be open and truthful about the harsh realities of animal exploitation. I’m very glad I posted the heart-breaking story about the dairy cow who made the decision to hide one of her twins in the woods and give the farmer the other, rather than lose both. Everyone needs to know that. She deserves to have her story told and I know that it has touched the hearts of everyone who has read it. The same goes for my poem. But for the children I want to provide hope, happiness and enjoyment.
Positivity is the way forward and positivity, fun and entertainment is the way we want to encourage veganism at Violet’s Vegan Comics. We want to give something good to bright, happy, kind, veggie children. And we want to enlighten the instinctively compassionate little ones who haven’t heard of veganism but who are naturally inclined towards it. The stories on this website are for all children – even grown up ones – and I hope they will be enjoyed by everyone who reads them.
I therefore decided Where are you going Deidra? wasn’t finished. It needed a fully rounded happy ending that all children’s stories should have. So today I’ve finished it. I’ve worked all day and I’m pleased with it now.
Then I made double chocolate chip cookies (I added some fair trade cocoa to the recipe from Jasmine #3 ) which gave my day a very very satisfying ending indeed 🙂
