How many friends could a Bibbolybob make if a Bibbolybob came to Earth?

Most enlightened people have become that way only after working hard to un-learn “facts” that they were taught as children, such as ‘humans are omnivores’.  That’s why it is so wonderful to find an early learning book which tells the truth.

How many friends could a Bibbolybob make if a Bibbolybob came to Earth?

How many friends could a Bibbolybob make if a Bibbolybob came to Earth? (aka Wibbolywub and the Earthlings ) is one such book by Edward Benn, illustrated by Juliet Mahoney.

How many friends could a Bibbolybob make if a Bibbolybob came to Earth?

This book is first and foremost an engaging story, full of bright, colourful illustrations, about an alien visitor to Earth who is eager to make friends.  It is secondly a lovely, friendly way to introduce the numbers 1 to 10 to young children.  Numbers (digits) appear throughout the illustrations as Wibbolywub counts his friends and the readers can count with him.  Once he has made ten friends, they play a few counting and measuring games which show how much fun numbers can be.

How many friends could a Bibbolybob make if a Bibbolybob came to Earth?

And thirdly it is an honest and straight-forward illustration of the simple truth that omnivores, carnivores and herbivores have recognisable anatomical attributes appropriate for their particular diet and, as an alien with no previous knowledge of Earthlings would clearly deduce, humans are herbivores.

How many friends could a Bibbolybob make if a Bibbolybob came to Earth?

There is even a fun post script at the end, in the form of a peak inside Wibbolywub’s notebook, which contains three of the charts (those with numbers in) from Dr Milton Mills’ The Comparative Anatomy of Eating – the work which inspired the story.

A lovely big book with a lovely big story that would delight any child and sit proudly on any bookshelf.

What they don’t tell you at school about William Wilberforce

It’s William Wilberforce’s birthday! Happy William Wilberforce Day everybody! 😀

What they will tell you:

William Wilberforce

  • William Wilberforce (1759-1833) is one of the best known British abolitionists. He was a Parliamentarian, writer and social reformer.
  • He was a close friend of William Pitt, the youngest Prime Minister in British history.
  • Wilberforce campaigned for health care, educational and prison reform and legislation to prohibit the worst forms of child labour. However, his greatest political efforts concerned the abolition of the slave trade and slavery.
  • In 1788-1789 he presented his Abolitionist Bill before the House of Commons for the first time. In a moving speech, he recited the horrific facts of slavery for three hours and ended with the words: “having heard all of this you may choose to look the other way but you can never again say that you did not know”.
  • Despite Wilberforce’s efforts the bill did not pass. Year after year, he re-introduced anti-slavery motions but to no avail…

Arktel: The planet only children could save is a beautifully illustrated book by Menkit Prince.

It’s about three planets: Tarjez, Arktel and Earth. On planet Tarjez, we fast forward to what could happen if we keep going the way we are on Earth i.e. total destruction.

Children from Arktel witnessed the destruction of Tarjez and decided to take action because they saw similar trends happening in their world that could lead to Arktel’s destruction.

The World’s First Bee Highway.

Great news!

Jardin's avatarJardin

This is the sort of urban initiative that we all dream about but is actually being achieved in Norway. The Oslo Garden Society, working with the municipal government, individuals, schools and private companies, has created the world’s first bee highway – a network of feeding stations and shelter every 250 metres in a corridor across the city.

Plants for bees

We all know the consequences of the decline of the bee population – in parts of China, farmers are resorting to pollinating plants by hand and in some parts of the US, bee hives are hired by food producers so that their crop can be pollinated. Some reports indicate that the US has lost 42% of its bee population. In Europe, one third of our wild bees are in serious decline. Intensive farming, use of insecticides, climate change are all cited as causes.

Quick! Prevent Fracking in Lancashire!

Update: VICTORY!!!!!

Violet's Vegan Comics's avatarViolet's Vegan Comics

UPDATE:  Lancashire county councillors have rejected Cuadrilla’s application to drill for shale gas at Preston New Road.  Fantastic news and a huge relief!  Thank you to everyone who signed the petition.  Stay in touch with Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth because this is just the beginning.  According to the Guardian article, Cuadrilla will certainly appeal the decision and our Conservative government is extremely pro-fracking.  But we can stop them if we stick together.  A big thanks goes out to all the councillors on the committee who stood strong and voted against Cuadrilla’s application.

dont-frack-future-web

A critical decision on fracking is taking place in Lancashire. County councillors are set to either slam the doors on plans to drill for shale gas, or give way to the fracking industry.

After an initial vote, councillors have hit a deadlock. Seven have come out in support of fracking, with seven other councillors…

Being Resourceful

It got to that time of week again – the day before food shopping.  The cupboards were looking quite bare and Miranda and I were feeling very peckish.  We’d finished off the last flapjack the day before and there were no munchies left in the house.  There must be something I could make, I said to myself, but what?  I had no flour left.

But I was determined.

What I did have was some rolled oats, some sugar, some olive oil, some cocoa and some sultanas.

*And this is what I did:

Weighed out 8 ounces of rolled oats and put them through the food processor to make a rough oat flour.  Put the flour in a bowl, added 2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1 ounce of cocoa, a generous load of sultanas and 4 ounces of sugar, and mixed it all together thoroughly.  Then I added 4 fluid ounces (120 ml) of olive oil and 5 tablespoons of water to the dry mixture and combined to form a very moist cookie mixture.  I put heaped teaspoons of this onto lined baking sheets and baked at 180°c for 20 minutes.

Pendennis Castle

DSCN2351

I never got around to telling you about our visit to Pendennis Castle when we went to Cornwall last year.  I have mixed feelings about castles.  On the one hand I love the feeling of history, picturing how people used to live at the time the castle was built.  I feel amazed at the architecture and how such big, strong, heavy, impressively crafted structures got built in the days before motor vehicles and cranes.

DSCN2395

DSCN2392

On the other hand I recoil at the violence they remind me of – the dungeons, the canons, the holes in walls for shooting arrows through and holes above the gates for pouring boiling oil through.

DSCN2355

But at Pendennis Castle at least there is one thing I’m not in two minds about – the cake!

DSCN2332

Here there was not just one, but two different types of vegan cake!  The lemon cake you see above and the flapjack pictured below.  I eat a lot of flapjacks and I can honestly tell you that this was the best I’ve ever eaten!

DSCN2334

Of course we told the cook how much we loved it and how pleased we were that there were vegan options on the menu and the lovely lady said that they always make sure there is something for every dietary requirement and she invited us to return to the cafe for lunch as she was making a delicious vegan soup.

Hurrah for English Heritage!  Very well done 😀

Oh, and the views are pretty nice too 😉

Math and Science through Plant Exploration

marigold40's avatarThe Marigold School of Early Learning

Math and science are aspects of early childhood education that can be learned through plants.  Columbine and spider wart are two plants that have unique petals and leaves; each plant allows for children to learn about how a plant grows and incorporates numbers and patterns.

There are a couple of ways I will mention that a provocation for math and science can be set up for children to question, explore and learn from.  First I like to set up a potted plant or fresh cut flowers so that the children can admire the the plant and incorporate both art and literacy…

Eco-Friendly Projects

newcreation7788's avatarNew Creation Sewing

Do you know that American’s send 11 million tons of used textiles to landfills each year?  Many of these items are in great condition and simply get tossed into the trash can.  This averages out to about 65 pounds of textiles (clothing. linens, fabrics, etc) that head straight to the landfill.

Further, are you aware that synthetic (man-made fabrics) take many years to decompose (if they decompose at all-think about it, polyester is made from plastic water bottles and thus is essentially plastic).   It can take 30-40 years for nylon to decompose whereas cotton takes about 1-6 months.  (Clothing decomposes faster if it is cut into stripes).

Imagine, if you will, taking these unwanted textiles/clothing and turning them into something useful-a new creation!

Postcards

postcard

We have just had some colourful postcards printed and would like to share them.

We slip them into library books and books in second-hand shops (as if they were forgotten bookmarks) in the hope that someone will find them and be intrigued enough to look at the website.

It’s quiet, easy, pleasant activism and who knows where it might lead?

The trick is not to get over enthusiastic and put too many in one place in one go.  If a staff member spots them they will probably just throw them away, and may even check for more in other books.  But if the occasional one is found by a library user, they might enjoy it, keep it as a bookmark, and one day be curious enough to visit us here.

So, we thought it would be doubly exciting if we could get these out and about in other places around the country, even around the world, and if you’d like to join in you’d be more than welcome.

We have 500 of these babies in our possession and would be glad to send a few to anyone who contacts us asking for some.  So let us know – are you feeling sneaky? 😀

Say it with knitting!

knit writing

Whether it be on your clothes, a cushion cover or a patchwork blanket – you can say it with knitting!

First of all decide what you want to write.  Then make a plan.

You’ll need some squared paper which you can buy or make yourself.  Each square on the paper will represent one stitch on your needle.  So number the squares and then mark out whatever you want to write in knitting.  Once you’ve worked out how many stitches wide your whole piece will be you can cast on in your background colour, and have your contrasting colour ready to use when you come to the stitches mapped out on your plan.  As you change colours you just string the other colour across the back of the knitting ready to use next time that colour is required by your plan – you don’t cut – just keep changing between colours…

Here is a painting from inside the Loving Hut – it says “The best way of life, is the veggie way”

I visited the Loving Hut several times during my stay in Leuven.  I went back for chocolate chip cookies, more cake, and on Thursday I tried the Broccoli pasta met champignons en roomsaus!  Which was absolutely brilliant!  I loved it!  Unfortunately by this time in the week my camera battery had run out, so I couldn’t take a photograph.  I did draw a picture of it:

I visited Greenway vegetarian restaurant!  I came here twice on my visit to Leuven, and it is a brilliant place. 🙂 You can eat in or take-away, so I did both!DSCN3391

I arrived just when they had opened on my first visit!  DSCN3390

I had vegan spaghetti bolognese with toasted cashews on top to take-away!  It was fantastic and delicious!

It really was brilliant food.  And excellent service from very friendly people!

On my second visit I chose a “wortelburger” from the menu, which I chose because it said it was vegan!  I have since discovered that “wortel” means “carrot” 🙂 This was very tasty, in a toasted bun, with lettuce and pineapple!  Scrumptious!

DSCN3654

I highly recommend you visit this restaurant, they have a wide selection of tasty foods for all your preferences and desires!  I liked the seating too – I sat at a high table on a high stool with my feet dangling off the ground!  If that doesn’t sound appealing to you, don’t worry, there are lots of tables at conventional heights.
