Story continues from yesterday:

Luke read the letter.
āExplain,ā said Dad, āand the truth this time.Ā What did you send that caused alarm to the receivers?ā
Luke explained.Ā āTheyāre sāposed to be lookinā after animals, not killinā em!Ā Theyāre pretendinā itās not cruel to kill āem for meat so I found a picture on the internet of a bull beinā killed in a slaughterhouse anā I printed it out to show āem how cruel it is.Ā To show āem so they wunāt keep doinā it!ā
Mum and Dad looked at each other without saying anything.Ā Luke couldnāt tell whether they were still mad.Ā He was about to make another attempt at convincing them he was right when Dad spoke up.
āAnd you sent this to their homes?āĀ Luke nodded.Ā āWell of course they were upset! You shouldnāt be writing to peopleās home addresses Luke, thatās out of order!Ā If youāve got a problem with a company, you write to the company!ā
āI did!Ā We did!Ā We wrote loadsa times to the sanctuary and they ignored us!Ā For months!Ā Then Taniaās mum said it was trustees who decided things at charities and theyāre sāposed to run the charity for the reasons it was set up which is to prevent unnecessary sufferinā.Ā So Mayburyās payinā for unnecessary sufferinā ā coz itās not necessary for people to eat animals ā instead of preventinā it.Ā So Tania said they had no right to ignore us coz they should be countable for their actions and theyāre breakinā charity law so someoneās got to hold them to count for that!Ā So one of us found their addresses from, erm, a website and we started writinā to them at home.ā
āOne of us?ā
āDonāt matter who.Ā Itās not illegal.ā
āAnd did that make them answer you?ā
āNo.ā
āIf you were hoping for a response you must have put our address on your letters,ā said Mum.
āNo. I didnāt,āĀ Luke insisted.Ā āWe give āem an email address to reply to.ā
Dad took a deep breath.Ā āThese are good people Luke, they donate their time and their expertise to help an animal sanctuary.Ā Youāve made your feelings clear and theyāve heard you.Ā Thereās nothing more you can do.Ā You canāt force them to change.Ā Sending them grisly pictures of slaughtered animals is going too far.Ā No wonder they were upset.ā
Luke was incensed.Ā āTheyāre upset?!Ā Theyāre the ones who did it!Ā Dāyou think I liked lookinā at that picture?Ā No ā I didnāt.Ā Nobody wants to look at that, but people who pay for it to happen have no right to complain!ā
āLuke,ā Dad began.
āNo, heās right,āĀ interrupted Mum.Ā āItās these peopleās responsibility to run the charity by the principles it was started on.Ā And if they go astray they have to be answerable.Ā They should have answered the childrenās very reasonable request in the first place.Ā Ignoring them left the children with no other recourse than to write to them at home.Ā They brought it on themselves.ā
Luke was relieved that heād finally got through to somebody.Ā He nodded and looked at Dad who was harder to read.
āBut you mustnāt be abusive in these letters,āĀ Mum added.
āIām not.ā
āOr threatening, or use any foul language.ā
āI donāt.Ā I wouldnāt.Ā I never have.Ā I jusā tell the truth.Ā We all just tell the truth and ask āem to stop.Ā To save all the animals like theyāre sāposed to.ā
Dad still didnāt say anything.
Mum nodded.Ā āGood, okay.ā
Perceiving that the inquest was over, Luke left the room.
āWeird though,ā Mrs Walker commented, āhow did the police get our address?Ā That creeps me out.ā
Her husband shrugged. āIām sure thereās a reasonable explanation.ā
****
Luke opened his bedroom door and grinned at his friend.
āWhat?ā asked Joe.
āWeāve had a reply from Maybury!ā
