Chapter 18 of Velma the Vegan Vampire: ‘Locked Doors’ begins today:

Velma the vampire dressed as Margaret

Muriel was woken at 4 am by a loud pounding on the door.

“Police! Open up!”

She sat upright in bed and, even when she heard her front door being bashed open, she didn’t move.

Two uniformed officers burst into her bedroom. “Muriel Gedding, you are under arrest. Step out of bed and keep your hands where I can see them.”

Muriel, in stunned silence, did as she was told.

Outside, hanging upside down in a nearby tree, Velma watched as her pyjama-wearing friend was escorted to a waiting police car. When the car pulled away she would have followed but she knew where they were going and could catch up later. Right now she needed to check on Andy. There were three and a half hours until sunrise.

She arrived at Andy’s place just in time to see one police car pulling away, leaving one parked outside. Two uniformed officers stood talking by it and one of them had Sammy with him.

“Are we leaving the dog with the downstairs neighbour again?” asked the nervous-looking young one.

“No, apparently it wasn’t really the neighbour last time,” the more mature cop told him. “They think it was the vampire pretending to be the neighbour. So they want us to leave it with the dog warden.”

“What if the vampire comes for it again? Isn’t the dog warden the first place she’ll look?”

“We’re hoping she will and we’ll be waiting for her,” said the confident, mature cop with a smug smile.

We will? What are we gonna do? We don’t have any of the special task force gear!”

“No, but we have a bargaining chip don’t we?” He winked and nodded towards Sammy.

“That’s it? That’s all we’ve got to protect ourselves? Won’t she be angry if we don’t let her have the dog? Aren’t vampires supposed to be wicked strong? This is crazy! Shouldn’t we get some back-up? Armed back-up?”

Confident cop sighed. “Get the dog in the car tough guy.”

The Velma Bat flew to the police station. There were three hours until sunrise.

Relieved to be able to mist again, Velma entered under the back door of the police station.
