Chapter 18 of Velma the Vegan Vampire continues from yesterday:
It was twilight now. The dark blue skyline was lightening and sunrise was less than an hour away. Velma couldn’t go home, nor could she go anywhere dogs weren’t allowed, but she urgently needed to get inside. And she was hungry. She’d gotten no sustenance from Ivy yesterday and she’d also taken no prey the night before. If she missed out now, she might lose control tomorrow; might be so hungry she wouldn’t be able to stop herself taking the first prey she saw, whoever they were.
The old part of town was full of ancient-looking terraced buildings on cobbled streets. Some of it was residential but there were a few boutique shops and one very old Traditional Family Butcher. The butcher’s window and door were completely covered with a steel security shutter. There was a notice on it which read Owner on premises at all times, ring bell for service or deliveries. Velma smiled. “He lives upstairs.”
The shutter was bolted to the pavement but she had no trouble forcing it up and opening the shop door. Once over the threshold she pulled the shutter back down and closed the door behind her. The proprietor, having complete faith in his steel shutter, had not felt the need to install a burglar alarm.
Velma was extremely relieved. She had found sanctuary and nourishment with twenty two minutes to spare. All was well.
“Who’s there?”
The shout came from upstairs but Velma didn’t bother to shout back. She went straight up and told him, face to face, who she was, why she was there and what he’d done to deserve her visit.
