Chapter 19 – Magistrates’ Courts – begins now:
Court 1
“Andrew Flench, you are charged with accessory to murder. This is an indictable offence so it will not be tried here and you will not be asked for a plea today. This is simply a bail hearing. Does the prosecutor have any objection to bail?”
A woman in a grey suit stood up. “Yes Your Worship,” she replied. “The Crown objects to bail because the defendant is suspected of being an accessory to a series of murders, including that of the Prime Minister. We have reliable evidence proving that he is a close personal friend of the murderer; that he sent threatening ultimatums on behalf of the murderer; and that he enabled the murderer to get to London for the purpose of killing the Prime Minister by buying her a train ticket.”
“Would you like to respond Mrs Coach?”
Andy’s solicitor stood up. “Yes Your Worship, thank you.” She looked at her notes. “Mr Flench has no criminal record, he has a full time job and is well liked in the community. He will be pleading Not Guilty to this charge and, being determined to clear his name, he will not abscond.”
The Presiding Justice consulted the other two magistrates on the bench before turning back to the court. “Is the murderer still at large?” she asked the prosecutor.
“Yes Your Worship.”
“And has Mr Flench co-operated with police efforts to find her?”
“No Your Worship.” She hesitated before continuing, “And, if I might add, given the exceptional and not fully understood abilities of the murderer, we are concerned that releasing Mr Flench is likely to result in her helping him to abscond.”
Andy couldn’t believe this was happening to him. He looked pleadingly at his solicitor.
“Might I suggest house arrest with electronic tagging Your Worships?” Christine Coach ventured. “My client has a rescue dog, an animal who has endured abuse in the past and now suffers from separation anxiety when Mr Flench is not there.”
The magistrate turned momentarily to confer with her colleagues before returning with “For the reasons stated by the prosecution, bail is denied. Mr Flench will be remanded in custody until his trial.”
The magistrate nodded at the custody officers who took Andy downstairs to wait in a holding cell for guards from His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service to transport him to the nearest High Security Prison. There he would be held as a Provisional Category A Prisoner for one month until his trial at the Crown Court.
