Chapter 18 of Velma the Vegan Vampire continues from yesterday:

There were two hours and ten minutes until sunrise so Velma headed straight to the dog shelter. When she got there she couldn’t decide what to do. She could take him by force, no problem. Unless they were ready for her like they were yesterday. But they wouldn’t be able to surprise her again, she knew what they were capable of now. Still she was hesitant.

Maybe it was better not to chance it. Surely Andy and Muriel would be released some time today. They had nothing to hold them on really. Although, what did she know about police procedures or criminal detention or anything else?

Meanwhile Sammy, after all he’s been through, must be so anxious, sat in a cage not knowing if he’ll ever see Andy again, not knowing what’s going to happen to him next. He must be so scared.

One thing at a time, she told herself. First, rescue Sammy.

Velma misted under the door of the dog shelter which was not yet open to the public. She moved past a reception desk and down a staff only corridor to the back of the building. There was a kitchen in which Confident Cop and Nervous Cop were enjoying a cup of tea and talking to the dog warden while she prepared breakfasts for the dogs in her care.

“… so we’re not going to be here all day,” Confident was telling her, “just till the sun comes up.”

“Why not?” asked the warden, “I thought you said the owner was a dangerous person. What if she comes during the day and you’re not here?”

“She won’t,” Confident smiled confidently. “She sleeps during the day.”

“How do you know that? I mean, even if she normally works nights or whatever, how do you know she won’t stay awake today?” The more she spoke, the more agitated she became. “I’m on my own today you know, my colleague just phoned in sick. How am I supposed to protect the dog on my own if this dangerous person comes to get him? You’ve gotta stay here!”

“Honestly love-”

“Don’t call me love!”

Nervous Cop tried to help. “It’s highly unlikely, I mean, we’re sure, er, certain – we’re certain she won’t come in daylight,” he smiled nervously, “unless – you don’t have sewer access here do you?”

Velma misted under the back door into an enclosed yard, surrounded by brick walls on all sides. Dog cages lined two walls and most were occupied. Sammy was in the cage nearest to the building so, when she became herself again, Velma had to keep her head down.

Someone barked. Someone else did the same. Three more joined in and, as the cacophony grew, Velma snapped the padlock from Sammy’s cage and he rushed to her with a howl of excitement. She must have looked strange, dressed as she was in Margaret’s clothes, but Sammy knew her. Velma picked him up, leaped to the top of the wall and dropped over the other side of it into the back road.

The back door opened as the warden reversed out with a trolley of dog bowls. “They probably just saw a cat,” she was telling the officers. “Shush you lot!” she mock-chastised the dogs, “it’s too early for all that noise.”
