Velma the Vegan Vampire Chapter 19 – Magistrates’ Courts – continues from yesterday:
Court 3
“Muriel Gedding, you are charged with accessory to murder. This is an indictable offence so it will not be tried here and you will not be asked for a plea today. This is simply a bail hearing. Does the prosecutor have any objection to bail?”
A man in a black suit stood up. “Yes Your Worship,” he replied. “The Crown objects to bail because the defendant is a repeat offender who has absconded before. In this case she is suspected of being an accessory before the fact to the murder of the Prime Minister. The evidence indicates that she is a close personal friend of the murderer who knowingly clocked in at work using the murderer’s phone in order to give the murderer an alibi.”
“Would you like to respond Mr Arnold?”
Muriel’s solicitor stood up. “Er, yes, Your, Sir, yes, thank you sir.” He perused his notes. “Er, Ms Gedding’s previous conviction, for simple graffiti and vandalism, happened almost fifteen years ago when she was only eighteen years old. Though she did abscond from court, she returned of her own free will two days later and handed herself in. Subsequently, after completing six months’ detention, she has been gainfully employed and avoided all unlawful activity. She has never shown any propensity for violence and asserts that she is not guilty of the alleged offence. I therefore ask the court to grant bail without sureties.”
“Is Ms Gedding still in touch with the murderer?”
“No!” Muriel blurted out.
“Please do not address this court, madam, your solicitor will speak for you. Mr Arnold?”
“I believe not Your Honour, er, Worship, no.”
“I don’t even know where she is!” Muriel insisted truthfully. “Not that she did it anyway,” she added in a panic, remembering afterwards that Velma had been filmed doing it.
“Ms Gedding – if you interrupt this court again I will hold you in contempt.”
Muriel shut her mouth.
The Presiding Justice conferred with the other two magistrates on the bench for a few minutes before sharing their decision.
“Ms Gedding, your trial will be begin at the Crown Court in thirty days. Until then you are required to stay at home and you must wear an electronic monitoring tag at all times. You will allow the monitoring officer to access your home to install and maintain the equipment. Is that understood?”
Muriel nodded.
“Speak aloud please.”
“Yes.”
“Good. Failure to comply with these conditions will result in you having to wait on remand for trial. That is, in prison. Do you understand?”
“Yes.”
“Good. You are free to go. Go straight home and wait there for the monitoring officer who will arrive some time later today.”
