Chapter 16 continues from yesterday:

Mum opened the bedroom door.

โ€œLuke, donโ€™t you want to help decorate the tree?โ€

โ€œerm, no thanks,โ€ he said without looking at her.

โ€œAre you okay?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œAre you sure?ย  You havenโ€™t been yourself since we went to the Maybury Centre.โ€

Luke didnโ€™t say anything.ย  Mum tried again.

โ€œWhat happened to upset you?ย  I thought youโ€™d like it there.โ€

Luke let go of his trains, sat back and looked at her.

โ€œIโ€™m fed up.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œCoz Iโ€™m fed up of grown ups not doinโ€™ what they say.โ€

Mrs Walker waited for more.

โ€œMaybury is a animal sanctry wot says it teaches people to be kind to animals.ย  A man from Maybury even came to give a talk at school to tell us not to keep animals in small cages, or let them have puppies.โ€

โ€œOkay,โ€

โ€œSo why do people whose whole job is lookinโ€™ after animals and teachinโ€™ other people to look after โ€™em propโ€™ly, still let animals be killed for food?ย  Why donโ€™t they care about them animals?ย  Why do they onโ€™y care about some animals?โ€

โ€œWhat makes you think โ€ฆโ€

โ€œThey sell dead animals in their cafe.โ€

โ€œReally?ย  That does surprise me.โ€

โ€œIf I canโ€™t trust people whose job is lookinโ€™ after animals then I canโ€™t trust nobody.ย  โ€˜cept myself!โ€

โ€œOoh, thatโ€™s hard.ย  No wonder youโ€™re fed up,โ€ said Mum sympathetically.

โ€œAnd Joe,โ€ he admitted.

โ€œWell, thatโ€™s something.ย  But you know Luke, you shouldnโ€™t give up.ย  You should tell them how you feel.ย  You should tell them you are offended by their decision to sell meat in their cafe.โ€

โ€œI did tell โ€™em.โ€

โ€œGood.ย  And what did they say?โ€

โ€œNothinโ€™ sensible.ย  Jusโ€™ said it was okay cozย it was ranginโ€™ and stainable.ย  Rubbish!โ€

โ€œTell them again.ย  Write them a letter.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s the point?ย  They wonโ€™t take no notice oโ€™ me.โ€

Mrs Walker was sorry her son felt so discouraged.ย  It was a terrible thing to lose your faith in humanity at such a young age.

โ€œThe thing is,โ€ she told him, โ€œyou never know when someone might listen.ย  The only thing you can be sure of is that if you donโ€™t say anything, they definitely wonโ€™t get the message.โ€

Luke looked at her and didnโ€™t say anything.

โ€œCome with me, come and help decorate the tree,โ€ she said.

When they got to the living room Jared and Dad already had things well underway.ย  The tree was gleaming with glittery gold and silver tinsel and different coloured shiny baubles.

โ€œMm, pretty good,โ€ said Mum, โ€œbut itโ€™s missing something.โ€

โ€œThe star for the top,โ€ said Jared, โ€œIโ€™m just about to do it.โ€

โ€œSomething else,โ€ said Mum and she left the room.

A moment later she was back with a small box from the kitchen.ย  She handed it to Luke.

โ€œNo Christmas tree is complete without a few sweet treats,โ€ she said, smiling.

Luke looked in the box.ย  It was full of chocolate Santas.ย  On the wrappers were the words:

Moo Free Organic Chocolate,

DAIRY FREE, GLUTEN FREE, VEGAN

Lukeโ€™s jaw dropped and his eyes lit up.

โ€œAre these for me?โ€ย  he asked.

โ€œNo, greedy boy, theyโ€™re for all of us!ย  Why donโ€™t you hang them on the tree?โ€

โ€œBut, โ€ฆ how come โ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œI found your leaflets,โ€ Mum explained.

โ€œWhat leaflets?โ€

โ€œThe ones stuffed in the back pocket of your black cords; the black cords you shoved under the bed and forgot about I donโ€™t know how long ago.โ€

โ€œOh, I wondered where they were.โ€

โ€œWell I found them and I checked the pockets before putting them in the wash, and there were these leaflets.ย  One with a picture of a cow on the front entitled โ€˜The Dark Side of Dairyโ€™ and one with a cute little brown and white piglet on the front entitled โ€˜Think Before You Eatโ€™.โ€

โ€œAnd you read them?โ€

โ€œAnd I read them.โ€

โ€œAnd thatโ€™s why โ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œYes it is,โ€ she paused for a moment, searching for the right words.ย  โ€œLuke,โ€ she went on, โ€œyou have good instincts.ย  When you started this crusade for animals you did it on instinct.ย  You hadnโ€™t been told any of the shocking facts and figures that are in those leaflets, you just knew it wasnโ€™t right.ย  And you did something about it.ย  You spoke out bravely and you acted.ย  You broke the rules when you felt you had to and you endured punishments, but you never wavered; you never stopped fighting.โ€

Luke nodded.ย  He wasnโ€™t sure why his mum was explaining something that she must have known he already knew, but he waited.ย  It would become clear eventually.ย  She continued.

โ€œSo I donโ€™t want you to give up hope now.ย  I want you to know that if you keep trying, you will make a difference.ย  You have already made a difference for Curly and Little Squirt and the rabb.., er, the damsons, but even more than that, youโ€™re a good influence on other people.โ€

Now, those were words Luke never thought heโ€™d hear from his mother.

โ€œYou have been a good influence on us.โ€

At this point she took his hand, led him into the kitchen and opened the freezer.

โ€œWhat dโ€™you fancy for Christmas dinner?โ€ she asked.

Luke looked in the freezer.ย  It was full โ€“ Mum always did a big shop for the Christmas holidays โ€“ and there were quite a few unfamiliar boxes and cartons.ย  He lifted them out one at a time to read the descriptions:

Booja Boojaย Hazelnut Chocolate Truffle,ย Booja Boojaย Raspberry Ripple andย Booja Boojaย Caramel Pecan Praline.

Luke was no longer fed up.ย  He smiled broadly at his mum.

โ€œAre these for all of us?โ€

โ€œYes they are.ย  For all of us,โ€ she said happily, โ€œand I got them from Bescoโ€™s.ย  They sell them in mainstream supermarkets Luke and that just shows how much progress youโ€™re making.ย  Thatโ€™s what happens when you speak out and you keep speaking out.โ€

Mrs Walker was treated to a rare hug which lasted a good half minute, and then Luke ran from the kitchen.

โ€œWhere are you going?โ€ she called after him.

โ€œIโ€™ve got some letters to write!โ€ he said.

Happy Christmas everybody!

We hope you have a good one!

A penchant for wandering off

Chapter 16 continues from yesterday:

โ€œLuke!ย  There you are!โ€ called Mum, โ€œyou do have a penchant for wandering off.โ€

Luke had no idea what a ponshon was but decided to take her word for it.

โ€œLook what Iโ€™ve got!โ€ she said.ย  She sounded excited.ย  โ€œI won it!ย  Well, I bought so many tickets I almost bought it!โ€

Luke looked at the slightly torn, slightly scratched, slightly coming apart at one end, box she was carrying.ย  He could hardly believe it.

โ€œIs that the same as ..?โ€ he asked her.

โ€œExactly the same!โ€ she said.ย  She sounded so happy.ย  โ€œHere you are darling, this is yours.โ€

She was holding a Hornby R.793 King Size Electricย train set.ย  It was exactly the same as Grandad Peteโ€™s.ย  Grandad Pete was Mumโ€™s dad and he loved trains.ย  He was a volunteer fireman at his local steam railway and he used to let Luke ride the engine with him when they visited at Easter and August bank holiday.ย  His Hornby train set had three locomotives โ€“ a King Henry VIII, a Class 29 (type 2) Bo-Bo, and a Class 3F Jinty Tank.ย  Plus it had coaches, wagons, trackside accessories and buildings.ย  It was brilliant.

Whenever they went to visit Grandad Pete, Luke and Grandad went up to the loft and played with the train set for hours.ย  It was always set up.ย  Always ready to play.

Grandad died the day after Lukeโ€™s seventh birthday.ย  He left Luke the train set in his will because he wanted it to go to someone who loved it as much as he had.

Sadly, Mum, because of an unfortunate series of events which were of no interest to Luke, accidentally backed over it with the car.ย  Luke had been devastated.ย  Mum equally so.ย  She couldnโ€™t replace it because they didnโ€™t make them like that any more.ย  And Luke didnโ€™t want just any train set.ย  But now sheโ€™d found one.ย  And it really was exactly the same as Grandadโ€™s.ย  Luke was momentarily lost for words.ย  He looked up at Mumโ€™s glowing face.

โ€œThank you,โ€ he tried to say but the words caught in his throat.ย  He was overwhelmed.ย  โ€œCan we go home and set it up?โ€ he asked.

โ€œNow?โ€ she asked, โ€œare we done here?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m done here,โ€ he replied.

***

On Christmas Eve, Luke pulled down the peak of his blue engine driverโ€™s cap, blew his whistle and called,

โ€œAll aboard!โ€

The train pulled out of the station.ย  It picked up speed and smoothly rode the tracks through Lego town, across the Scarf-River bridge, under the Bed-Tunnel through Bed-Mountain, and onto the Blue Pillowcase Coast.ย  When it got to Seaside station it stopped to pick up Batman, Spiderman and a couple of soldiers on leave, before continuing on its journey to the end of the line.ย  There was a near accident when a giant brown and white dog stepped onto the track but tragedy was averted when a quick-thinking observer lured the animal out of harmโ€™s way with a Digestive.

Outside, a car door slammed.

โ€œLuke, Jared โ€“ Dadโ€™s home.ย  Heโ€™s got the tree!โ€ Mum called from downstairs, โ€œcome downย and help me decorate it.โ€

Jared thundered down the stairs.ย  Luke was too busy.ย  Batman was late for a job interview โ€“ the train must keep going.ย  As it sped towards the old suspension bridge, the driver noticed two of the shoe lace suspenders had snapped, and the others looked like theyโ€™d struggle to take the strain.ย  He applied the brake but it was too late, the train was going too fast, it wouldnโ€™t be able to stop in time.ย  Suddenly Spiderman climbed out of the window and ran along the roof of the train to the front.ย  He spun his web and โ€ฆ.

Mum opened the bedroom door.

โ€œLuke, donโ€™t you want to help decorate the tree?โ€

Looking for a squashed cupcake

For all the Luke Walker chapters clickย hereย ๐Ÿ™‚

Chapter 16 continues from yesterday:

When he got to the cafe he decided to pop in.ย  He knew that 87p wouldnโ€™t ordinarily get him a cupcake but, since the end of the day was approaching, they might have made them half price.ย  Or maybe there was a squashed one that nobody else wanted.ย  It was worth a look.ย  He stepped inside and picked up a menu.ย  That was somewhat disturbing.

This animal sanctuary, this place of love and compassion, of respite and rescue; this place whose slogan,ย โ€œWe care about the well being of every animalโ€, was written across every sign and above every doorway, was selling dead animals in its cafe.

Luke spoke to the lady behind the till.

โ€œWhy are you selling meat?โ€

โ€œErm, well, itโ€™s on the menu,โ€ she replied.

โ€œBut why is it on the menu?โ€

โ€œBecause itโ€™s a cafe,โ€ she said, not knowing why he was confused.

โ€œItโ€™s a animal sanctโ€™ry cafe,โ€ Luke pointed out, โ€œand meat is dead animals.โ€

โ€œAhh,โ€ she replied, finally understanding where he was coming from. โ€œAll of our meat is from local, free range farms.โ€

โ€œWhat does that mean?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s sustainable.โ€

โ€œWhat doesย thatย mean?โ€

By this time a queue had formed behind Luke and when the manager saw that it wasnโ€™t moving, he came over.

โ€œIs everything okay over here?โ€ he asked the lady on the till.

โ€œOh, yes, erm, this young man has a question about the menu,โ€ she told him.

The manager steered Luke away from the counter.

โ€œHow can I help you?โ€ he asked.

Luke started again.

โ€œWhy do you sell meat here?โ€

โ€œBecause people want to eat it,โ€ the manager answered.

โ€œBut what about the animals who get killed for your meat?โ€

โ€œWell, โ€ฆโ€

โ€œAnd your eggs?โ€

โ€œAh, the eggs โ€ฆโ€

โ€œAnd cheese and milk and ice cream?โ€ย  Luke was getting louder and people were starting to look.

The manager spoke quietly in an effort to diffuse the situation.

โ€œI assure you that all the meat, eggs, fish, and dairy sold here comes from local free range farms with sustainable practices.โ€

Luke was exasperated.

โ€œThatโ€™s what she said!โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œWhat does that mean?โ€

โ€œIt means that it doesnโ€™t come from factory farms where animals are kept in small cages.ย  The animals are well looked after and are free to walk around.โ€

โ€œUntil theyโ€™re killed,โ€ said Luke.

โ€œEr, yes,โ€ said the manager.

โ€œAnd are the killinโ€™ sheds free range?โ€

โ€œEr, no,โ€ the manager admitted.

โ€œAre they special killinโ€™ sheds or are they the same killinโ€™ sheds what the factory farm animals go to?โ€

The manager knew a lot of eyes were on him and for a few moments he didnโ€™t say anything.ย  Luke, however, had plenty more to say.

โ€œTheyโ€™re the same horrible killinโ€™ sheds arenโ€™t they?ย  And them animals is the same as the animals who you look after here; who you say you love; who you say should be treated kindly.โ€

At this the manager felt he had a good come-back.ย  He answered with confidence.

โ€œAh, no, we donโ€™t sell the meat of any of the species who live at the sanctuary.ย  Only beef and pork and fish.โ€

Luke looked at him with disdain.

โ€œAnd,โ€ the manager added with a smile, โ€œwe do have vegetarian and vegan options on the menu.ย  Weโ€™ve got something for everyone.โ€

Luke was bitterly disappointed in what he had thought was a wonderful place.ย  That this was happening made absolutely no sense to him.ย  He was so sick and tired of adults saying one thing and doing another.ย  The manager, taking his silence as an end to their debate, turned to walk away.ย  Luke touched his arm and said,

โ€œSo, you know about veggietareun food, you know thereโ€™s no need to eat animals, but you still have โ€™em killed because some people like eatinโ€™ โ€™em.ย  And Maybury says it wants to teach people how to be kind to animals but it doesnโ€™t set a good example of not eatinโ€™ โ€™em.ย  It lets people think itโ€™s okay to eat โ€™em.ย  It pretends itโ€™s not cruel to eat โ€™em so people keep on doinโ€™ it.ย  So itโ€™s your fault when people keep on doinโ€™ it coz you could โ€˜ave told โ€™em not to and you didnโ€™t.โ€

He turned and walked out.ย  He didnโ€™t want a cake any more.

The beginning of the end

And here is the beginning of Chapter 16, the final chapter of the second book, More Luke Walker: animal stick up for-er:ย

Luke Walker and the Maybury Christmas Fayre

Luke reached for it at the exact same time as Jared.ย  They scowled at each other.

โ€œLet me have it.ย  I saw it first,โ€ Luke insisted.

โ€œWe saw it at the same time,โ€ Jared argued, โ€œand Iโ€™m the oldest so you have to do what I say.โ€

โ€œI do not,โ€ said Luke emphatically.

โ€œBoys!โ€ Mr Walker halted their squabbling, โ€œwhatโ€™s the trouble now?โ€

โ€œI want to get this for Mum,โ€ explained Luke, โ€œI saw it first.โ€

โ€œNo he didnโ€™t!โ€ argued his brother, โ€œIย saw it first andย Iย want to get it for Mum.โ€

The item in question was a dainty ceramic ornament depicting Little Bo Peep with a lamb โ€“ an ideal Christmas gift for anyoneโ€™s mother.ย  Dad took it off them and asked the lady how much it was.

โ€œAll the small ornaments are 50p,โ€ she told him.

Dad looked at Jared and appealed to his better nature.

โ€œLuke doesnโ€™t have much money Jared, so this is all he can afford.ย  Youโ€™ve got your paper round money so youโ€™ll be able to find something else.ย  Let your brother have this one.โ€

Jared shrugged.

โ€œOkay,โ€ he agreed and wandered off to the home-made jam stall.

Luke pulled a sticky fifty pence piece out of his pocket and handed it to the lady. She wrapped the ornament in tissue paper for him.ย  Dad smiled.

โ€œYour mumโ€™ll love that Luke, nice find.โ€

โ€œWhere is Mum?โ€ Luke asked.

โ€œWhere dโ€™you think?โ€ said Dad, grinning.

โ€œTombola!โ€ they both said at the same time.

This was the first time theyโ€™d been to the Maybury Christmas Fayre and it was pretty good.ย  There were lots of stalls where you could buy Christmas presents for reasonable prices โ€“ some things were second hand, some were home-made.ย  There were games, like Mumโ€™s favourite, the Tombola, where you had to get a ticket ending in 5 or 0 to win a prize, and some which had a prize every time like the lucky dip or Lukeโ€™s favourite where you paid 50p for a jar wrapped in Christmas paper without knowing what was in it.ย  If you were lucky it might be a jar full of sweets or marbles; if you were unlucky it might be full of tea bags.ย  But even that wasnโ€™t a complete loss because it could be a Christmas present for someone.ย  Nan liked tea.ย  There was also a cake stall, a raffle, and a dog show to see who was the prettiest dog and who was the cleverest dog and who was the most obedient dog.ย  Luke knew that Dudley wouldnโ€™t enjoy that because he was theย type of dog who had no interest in performing.ย  Heย wasย clever, but didnโ€™t feel it necessary to prove that to anyone.ย  He was his own dog and Luke respected that.

The other good thing about the Christmas Fayre was that it was in aid of helping animals.ย  Maybury Centre for Animal Welfare was a sanctuary where they looked after horses and donkeys and sheep and chickens and tortoises and anyone else who needed help and came their way.ย  They also rescued dogs and cats and rabbits and guinea pigs whoโ€™d been abandoned or neglected or cruelly treated, and they found happy new homes for them.ย  Luke was very glad that his Christmas shopping money was going to such a good cause.

By three oโ€™clock Luke had done all his shopping and was very happy with what heโ€™d got for everyone: Little Bo-Peep for Mum; gloves for Dad; football book for Jared; jar of tea for Nan; bowling DVD for Grandad; and a jar of marbles for Joe. Plus heโ€™d been lucky enough to score a jar of gobstoppers and a really cool stainless steel whistle for himself.

Luke had 87p left so while Dad went to find Mum, he decided to have a final look round.ย  In doing so he came across a man wearing climbing gear standing behind a table with a pen and a long list of names and numbers.

โ€œSponsor me to abseil down the clock tower?โ€ he solicited.

โ€œWhatโ€™s that?โ€ asked Luke.

โ€œAbseil means to descend down the side of a building on a rope.โ€

Luke looked confused.

The man tried again to explain.

โ€œSo, Iโ€™ll stand on the top of the tower wearing this harness attached to a rope which will be doubled through a loop. And Iโ€™ll jump off the top and bounce my feet on the side of the tower, going down bit by bit, sliding the rope through my hands until I get the bottom.โ€

โ€œYeah, I get what you mean, but why would you do that?โ€

โ€œTo raise money for Maybury.โ€

โ€œBut why donโ€™t you get sponsored to do somethinโ€™ useful, instead of abstaininโ€™.โ€

โ€œAbseiling,โ€ he corrected. โ€œRaising moneyย isย useful for Maybury.ย  They can do a lot of good things with it.โ€

โ€œYes, but if the thing you got sponsored for doinโ€™ was useful as well, like you could get sponsored for pickinโ€™ up litter, then you would get moneyย andย at the same time you would have done somethinโ€™ really useful.โ€

The man looked over Lukeโ€™s head at the elderly couple approaching his table.

โ€œSponsor me to abseil down the clock tower?โ€ he asked them.

Luke moved on.

Chapter Ten: Luke Walker and the allergic reactions

Luke was hesitant. If he made a mistake now it could cost him the game.ย  Janeway was a good card. She had a lot of Starfleet Authority and was also very cunning.ย  But which to choose, that was the important question.

“Come ohn,” said Joe, “it’s borin’ when you just sit there.ย  Choose one.”

“Okay, erm, I choose …” he hesitated again.

He really needed to win this round. He took a deep breath, looked Joe in the eye and said,

“Janeway. Cunning: 45.”

Joe looked at his next card and smiled.

“Worf. Cunning: 49.”

“Blast! I knew I should have chosen Starfleet Authority! What’s Worf’s Starfleet Authority?”

“I’m not telling you that!” said Joe, laughingly holding his cards close to his chest.

“Well, it can’t be higher than Janeway’s.ย  She was Captain.ย  Worf wasn’t captain was he?”

Luke consoled himself with the notion that he would have won if Joe hadn’t rushed him.ย  If he’d just been able to think about it for a bit longer he would certainly have chosen Starfleet Authority instead of Cunning.ย  Joe really should learn not to rush people, it’s not sportsmanlike.ย  Luke had one card left. It was Joe’s turn to choose the statistic.

“Neelix. To Boldly Go: 20.”

“What?!” Luke looked at his card in disbelief.ย  “Neelix can’t be better than Spock at boldly goin’!”ย  He sighed and handed it over.ย  “Spock. To Boldly Go: 15”

“Yesss! I have triumphed! The cards are mine, all mine, ha ha ha haaa,” Joe revelled in his rare victory.

“I’m hungry,” said Luke, pretending not to care.

“Me too,” his friend agreed and they tookย out their lunch boxes.ย  Joe peeked apprehensively between the two slices of Hovis Best of Both which made up his sandwich.ย  Sadly the peanut butter he’d hoped for was not present.ย  Luke was adding crisps to his Marmite and beetroot sandwiches.

“The crunch makes ’em extra good,” he explained.ย  Then, “uh oh, has she done it again?”

Joe nodded as he removed two slices of ham and bit into his plain bread and margarine.

“You’ve got to tell ‘er,” said Luke, tipping a few of his crisps into Joe’s lunch box.

“I have told her, she won’t listen!” Joe complained, “I said I’m not eatin’ meat or cheese no more and she said, ‘course you are!’ and that was that!ย  She won’t listen.ย  It’s okay, I just put it in the bin when she’s not lookin’.”

“What about your dad – you could tell ‘im to explain it to ‘er.”

“He won’t.ย  He just says ‘ya mother knowsย best’ and ‘listen to ya mother!’.ย  I’ll just have to be vegetarian in secret ’til I leave home.”

Luke frowned.

“That doesn’t sound like a good idea.ย  It’ll be pretty borin’ jus’ livin’ on bread an’ marg..”

“That’s okay,” said Joe as he took another bite, “thanks for the crisps,” he added.

“That’s it!ย  That’s what we’ll do!ย  Outlaws have to help each other!”

“What?”

“I’ll tell my mum I’m more hungry and I need a bigger packed lunch, with an extra sandwich an’ an extra bag o’crisps an’ an extra cake an’ an extra apple … then I can give half of it toย you!”

Joe liked that idea.

“Yeah! Thanks Luke. D’you think she’ll do it?”

“No problem,” said Luke confidently.

Fruitcake, flapjacks and papier-mรขchรฉ dinosaurs

Click here for the story so far ๐Ÿ™‚

Thursday 5 December

Jude made a fruitcake and flapjacks! I don’t know which I like best, because fruitcake is so sweet and juicy but flapjacks are golden and crunchy.

While Jude was baking I worked on my dress. Mum helped me to sew on the sewing machine and press the seams with an iron. We have a really old sewing machine which used to belong to our great aunt who was a seamstress.

I think being a seamstress would be a great job because I like sewing, and it would mean you could make all your own clothes! People used to make all their own clothes, that’s what they do in Little House on the Prairie.

Friday 6 December

In the morning we went to the shops, we got the food shopping for the week, and visited Button Boutique to look at needlework supplies. I bought some buttons for my collection: I got a pink one shaped like a flower and a green one with a sheep painted on it. They are fun things to get with your pocket money because they are only a few pence each. We also got chips from the chip shop afterwards!

We made papier mรขchรฉ dinosaurs this afternoon! They are tyranosaurus rexes and they are brilliant. We have to wait for them to dry before we can paint them, so they are in the porch right now.

Vegan book for children making papier mache dinosaurs in home school

Tuesday 10 December

We had a history test today. All morning we did revision by reading over our history exercise books, and then in the afternoon we had a test.

Mum made the test. She wrote three pages of questions about the things we studied so far this year in history, and we had to answer them. It was quite fun because I like quizzes, but I couldn’t remember some things.

I got sixty percent of my questions right, which Mum said is a B- grade! Jude got seventy four percent of hers right, so she got a B+.

Vegan book for children

Also we finished Little Town on the Prairie today. Our new morning reading book will be These Happy Golden Years (which is the next book in the series by Laura Ingalls Wilder).

I painted my papier mรขchรฉ dinosaur browny-purple with greeny-grey stripes. Jude’s is dark green and yellow, and Mum’s is yellowy-green with red eyes and blue spots all over his back. We should make other kinds of dinosaurs, stegosaurus and diplodocus and tricerotops.

I think my favourite type of dinosaur is the diplodocus, but I also like the other kinds too. I really like The Land Before Time films, my favourite character in that is Spike, But I don’t know what sort of dinosaur he is.

While I was playing after dinner I found Jude’s lip balm, which is strawberry flavoured. If you twist the bottom the lip balm comes out, like a glue stick. So I was just twisting it to see how far it would come out, and it must have come to the end because it got stuck. So I started twisting it in the other direction, but it wouldn’t go back in. And then it broke off, so I hid it under her chest of drawers.

Wednesday 11 December

It was really sunny but also chilly riding our bikes to the swimming pool, we wore gloves and hats and scarves. My bike is metallic purple, so is Jude’s, and Mum’s is golden.

In the afternoon I did decimals and fractions and adding and subtracting in maths. Jude did mental arithmetic.

We did quiet reading after maths. I’m reading a book called Refugee by Benjamin Zephaniah, Mum says she wants to read it after me, and Jude is still reading Emma.

For cookery we made nut-stuffed mushrooms! They were delicious and quite fancy. They would be great for a tea party. Mushrooms are not like other vegetables, they are special, because they are fungus.

Monday 2 December

We went to town for a shopping exercise this morning. ย Mum gave Jude and me ten pounds each and a shoppingย list each, and then we had to buy everything on the listย for less than ten pounds and get the best value for money. ย Mum said we did very well.

It was so fun to play at shopping! It was hard as well,ย because you have to do maths to work out which tin ofย beans or which box of pasta is best value for money.

You have to compare the prices, but you also have toย compare how much is in the boxes, and if it’s differentย then you need to divide the cost by the quantity, so that you know how much money one gram costs.

I really like going to the shop we did the exercise in, it’s a giant health food shop, big enough to push a trolley round, called Daily Bread and it has lots of food you can’t get in the ordinary supermarket. You can buy dried apple rings and big bags of peanuts and vegan ice cream and banana chips. And you can buy special organic beans which taste better than ordinary beans because they have oregano and things in them.

It’s a long walk out of town, and once we were allowedย to choose a big bar of chocolate each and I ate my wholeย one hundred gram bar on the walk back. ย We didn’t do that today though, we took a packed lunch with us and had a picnic while we waited for the bus.

We watched The Simpsons at six o’clock, and ate some of the nice things we got from Daily Bread. I ate apple rings and Jude sat in the big wicker chair and ate a lot of salted peanuts.

Fruit is a lot more fun when it’s dried out. Apple rings, banana chips, raisins, pineapple, mango, papaya. They are perfect for nibbling on. They’re just like sweets.

Tuesday 3 December

I had times tables tests this morning, and then we read Wuthering Heights together. I don’t like Catherine at all, she’s moody and spoilt. I don’t know why everyone is falling in love with her. I suppose they lived in the middle of nowhere, so there was nobody else for them to fall in love with.

After lunch we made treasure maps. We drew imaginary island maps with โ€œX marks the spotโ€ for where the treasure would be, and then we used teabags to dye our paper brown and we baked it in the oven!

A few years ago me and Jude did bury treasure in the back garden. We dug a big hole under the cherry tree with the red leaves, and we buried all our pennies. After a few months we dug them up and spent them on sweets at the corner shop. I could tell the shop keeper thought it was strange that we had money covered in soil, but he didn’t say anything.

Wednesday 4 December

In the morning we read Little Town on the Prairie and thenย learned some more about Boudicca. That was the finalย chapter in our book about Boudicca. ย Nobody knows when she died or where she was buried, but they think she survived the final battle her people had with the Romans. We have started a new project for science about gardening. We read from books about plants and soil, and wrote things down in our exercise books. After that we went outside and dug a vegetable patch in the lawn. The ground is really frozen in the garden so it is really hard to dig at all. It’s cold outside so we wore our hats and gloves. We also turned over the compost heapย and put some of the compost to mix into the vegetable patch.

We had to hand in our essays about chapter seven of David Copperfield. Mum says they are both very good essays. I used lots of quotes and I didn’t say anything in the conclusion that I hadn’t said in the middle. My essay was about David’s friendships with Steerforth and Traddles.

When Dad got home from work we all had ginger cake.

Chapter Two continues …๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve started reading my Harry Potter book, it’s good so far, it’s funny and exciting. ย I read some of it out to Mum and Dad, and they like it too. ย Jude is reading Emma by Jane Austen.

Jude told me that in her library book there are lots of different kinds of foxes, some with big ears, some which are white or orange, tiny little ones and great big ones.Thursday 7 November

For my dinner today I made pasta and pasta sauce and lettuce and tomatoes and cucumber! This project is so much fun! ย It’s great, I am pretending I’m a witch who lives in a big house full of witches, and it’s my job to follow the budget and feed us all. ย Jude made pasta and vegetable hotpot. ย It was really sunny today.

In the morning I did knitting. ย I’m running out of pink yarn for my pig, but Mum says that’s okay, because I can use brown because some pigs are pink and brown!

In the afternoon I read some more Harry Potter. ย I really like all the descriptions of the different characters, Ron is very funny and Hermione is so caring. ย They all live in a haunted castle together.

Friday 8 November

We are studying the Celtic people in history. ย They wereย artists who made beautiful carvings of intricate knots and things. ย Mum read from the book to us and then we answered questions and made drawings from photos in the book.

In the afternoon we worked on our own projects. ย I amย still making my knitted pig which I found veryย challenging today because I had to increase and decrease stitches to make a leg for him.

Jude was sewing beads onto her caterpillar, which isย getting very pretty! ย I asked her if she thought she wouldย put wings on the caterpillar so that sometimes he couldย turn into a butterfly, but she said that would be impossible.

We had our geography test, we had to label each country on a blank map of Europe. ย I got twenty-six right! ย That’s more than half, because there are forty four countries in Europe. ย Next we are going to learn all the counties in the UK!

We also gave Dmitri a bath with mint and tea tree shampoo which keeps fleas away. Dmitri looks so sweet and little when he’s wet. ย It takes all three of us to give him a bath because he tries to climb out the whole time.

Monday 11 November

We visited The City Museum and Art Gallery and saw paintings and sculptures by an artist called Richard Barnard. ย I really like pottery sculptures, I bet it would be fun to make them. ย My favourite was a lovely sculpture of a sitting woman. ย I think it would be nice if sculptures were painted, because most of the time they are grey or brown, because that’s what colour the clay is.

We got some books from the library about Batik and Shakespeare and a book called Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontั‘.

When we got home we read Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream which is about a naughty fairy who casts a spell on the fairy queen because he loves her, but all kinds of things go wrong, and everybody falls in love with the wrong person.

November began like so

For the first chapter of What Me And Jude Did While Everyone Else Was At School click here ๐Ÿ™‚

Chapter Two:

Monday 4 November

We are doing a project called Operation Independence! ย We have to plan and cook our own meals all week! ย This morning Mum gave us each ยฃ20 and we went to the supermarket and bought all the food we think we’ll need! ย We each had our own trolleys, and had to check the prices of different foods to make sure we had enough money.

At dinner time we each made our own dinners! ย I made Sosmix, steamed potatoes, broccoli, carrots and gravy, and Jude made tomato soup, muffins and salad.

We have to keep a record of everything we do so that we can write a report at the end of the week!

Tuesday 5 November

In geography today we have been memorising all the countries in Europe and making a map with them all on. ย It’s not easy to remember what all the countries are, there are so many! ย There’s a tiny little one which I keep forgetting the name of.

Later I baked a chocolate cake which is one of my favourite recipes, the edges are wonderfully crispy and the icing is really thick, it’s called chocolate fudge icing. I really like spreading it out over the top of the cake.

Jude made Hungarian potatoes for her dinner, with broccoli, and I made Sosmix, new potatoes and baked beans. I love baked beans, they are my favourite food. And Sosmix is delicious. ย All you have to do is add water to the powder in the box, and make your sausages out of the mixture! Then you can cook them on the grill or in the oven or you can fry them. ย I made mine on the grill because Jude was using the frying pan to fry her onions and tomatoes, and the oven to bake her Hungarian potatoes. ย Hungary is one of the countries we need to remember for geography!

Wednesday 6 November

After swimming today we cycled through the park to the library. We don’t usually go that way, I have never been through that park before. It had a stream running through it which had some shopping trolleys in it, which is so sad for the birds and fishes, if there are any. I wonder why anyone would put them there? We rode our bikes over a bridge across the stream, and then took a short cut through the supermarket car park.

At the library we chose some books from the non-fictionย section about animals because we are starting our ownย projects. I borrowed books about apes, and Jude borrowed books about foxes. ย I also got Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix ! ย It is the longest book I’ve ever seen! I haven’t read any of the other Harry Potter books, but this one looks really interesting. It’s got a red and yellow phoenix on the front.

When we got home we had lunch and then we readย David Copperfield. ย Sadly David has come home from hisย holiday with Peggotty to find that nothing in his house is the way he remembers it, and his mum is all stressed and uncomfortable.

Later on I made mashed potato pie with textured vegetable protein and tomatoes and onions and carrotsย and gravy. It’s difficult to cut onions without your eyes watering โ€“ I tried wearing sunglasses but it didn’t help. I stirred the gravy because it gets lumpy if you don’t stir it.

Me and Jude’s story continues tomorrow

Good ole Mr Peggotty

For the story so far clickย hereย ๐Ÿ™‚

Jude has been working on her caterpillar again, while I readย David Copperfield out loud to us all. ย David has gone onย holiday with Peggotty to Yarmouth. ย They go to stayย with her brother, Mr Peggotty, who lives in a boat on theย beach with two children, Emily, who is around the same age as David, and Ham, who is older and Mrs Gummidge. ย There is a funny conversation where David asks lots of questions. ย He finds out that Ham and Emily are cousins, who were both orphaned and then adopted by Mr Peggotty. ย Mrs Gummidge was married to Mr Peggotty’s business partner, but she is a widow now, and so lives with him too. ย They are all funny and interesting characters, I especially like Mr Peggotty, because you canย tell he likes David. After that mum helped me make a design and then I drewย it onto a T shirt with fabric pastels! ย My design hadย flowers and a dog. ย I used purple and orange and blueย pastels.

Thursday 31 October

Today we had the special cereal with the strawberries inย it. I love that. ย I am always disappointed to find there isย no fruit in cereals which have fruit on the box, mum toldย me that is just a serving suggestion. ย But today’s cerealย did have fruit in it! ย Jude and I always argue over whoย has taken too many strawberries, but I can’t help it if theyย happen to fall out of the box into my bowl.

In the afternoon we made pop up cards and collage cardsย by cutting up magazines and coloured paper. ย Jude madeย drawings of cartoons and stuck them on paper springs,ย and I cut out pictures of dogs and cats and flowers fromย a magazine.

This was the last day of our first month of home-school. ย I like it.

Monday 28 October

Mum said that because I haven’t been able to learn to type,ย I could practise my handwriting instead. I have quiteย good writing when I am careful, but it gets messy when Iย rush or get distracted. ย After that I read my book. ย Iโ€™mย reading a book called I Want Doesnโ€™t Getย  by Rony Robinson. ย Itโ€™s really good. Itโ€™s about a little boy and his two sisters.

This afternoon I had a mental arithmetic test and a timesย table test. ย I am not very good at doing maths in my head,ย so after the test mum went through all the questions withย me and showed me how to do the ones I had done wrong.

I donโ€™t really remember the times tables unless I do themย one at a time, in the right order. Jude wrote a story.

Tuesday 29 October

We were going to do science this morning, but we wantedย to do an experiment about the greenhouse effect, mum saidย it wasnโ€™t sunny enough so we can do it another day. ย So we did spellings instead. ย We had to write out theย meanings of the words we learned, and then we did ourย projects. ย Judeโ€™s caterpillar is nearly finished, it looks really good. ย I am still working on my pig, which is not nearly finished.

We had tomato patรฉ and salad sandwiches for lunch, andย we watched the BBC play, which was about some ladiesย who go to live in a caravan, which starts to roll down aย hill, but then it stops.

I wrote another story for English. ย The exercise was toย make a plan and then make a story. ย This time I wrote aย story about a girl called Bernice who meets a goblin in herย garden, and then she gets into an argument with himย because he wonโ€™t let her put the washing out. ย Eventuallyย the goblin runs away.

Jude was also writing a story, but hers had to haveย propositions and complex sentences. ย Jude said she wasย writing a really scary story with creepy monsters andย vampires. ย She’s really good at making up those sorts ofย stories.

In cookery lesson we carved Halloween pumpkins! ย Weย scooped out the insides and then we cut out scary eyesย and teeth and noses, it was brilliant.

Wednesday 30th October

After swimming we visited the museum at the Heritageย Centre. ย It is great in there because you can see inside aย glass case pictures of what the town looked like a hundred years ago, and there are artefacts like tin pots and badgesย from the 1920s. ย They have an old hair dresser’s chair with aย big blow drier fixed to the top. ย I don’t like that thoughย because it looks like an evil villain’s brain-washing chair.

I like the little room at the back, which is decorated toย look like a little kitchen, and you can look in at all the oldย food tins and boxes from the early 1900s, and there is anย old kettle and an old iron and things. ย It’s really interesting.

The Robin Hood Pageant

For the whole chapter click here ๐Ÿ™‚

Saturday 26 October

Today we went to the Robin Hood Pageant! ย We went onย the train to Nottingham in the morning, and when weย got to the castle we had our picture taken with aย statue of Robin Hood.

At the pageant there was archery, sword fighting andย jousting, just like in A Knight’s Tale! ย We didn’t go andย see that, but there were people dressed as knights, noblemen, noblewomen and peasants from history. ย Jude got a bowย and arrows so that she can learn to do archery, and I got aย wooden toy sword! ย And I also got a historical Robin Hood colouring book.

A woman showed us how she was making somethingย on a loom, and there was a spinning wheel. ย Mum boughtย a little loom so that we can make our own cloth!

We saw a potter, and he explained to us what hisย different pots were for. ย He had a great tall pot which heย said was for putting pears in, to store them and preserveย them for the winter. ย He said that you would fill up the pot with pears and then pour alcohol into it, and theyย would last a long time, and make a nice dessert.

Jude bought a money box from him which had a slot, butย no hole in the bottom for money to come out. ย You haveย to break it to get the money out. ย The man said youย could use a knife and some jam to try to get a coin out,ย but I think that would be difficult.

People were milling grains with a big mill stone, andย they explained to us that they used to make very whiteย flour for the rich people by putting all the milled grainsย into a piece of cloth to sieve out all the brown pieces, andย the rich people would have white bread while the poorย people would have the wholemeal bread flour which wasย left over. ย She said that as a result, the poor people wereย much healthier than the rich people.

I got dressed up as a knight in chain mail and a helmet,ย which was very exciting. ย I had my picture taken and itย was great. ย A knight’s armor is very heavy, so after I hadย taken it all off I felt queasy, I don’t know how peopleย could walk around in that stuff, and fight battles.

The Big Draw

For the whole chapter click hereย ๐Ÿ™‚

For maths I had to do brain teasers about square numbersย and division. ย That was exhausting! ย This afternoon we made still life pastel drawings! ย Mumย set it up for us to draw three teddy bears sitting in a row. ย They are Jude’s bears, she won them at the Christmasย bazaar by guessing the name of the littlest one.Friday 18 October

Tomorrow we are going to the Big Draw! ย I can’t wait! ย Iย can hardly think about anything else. ย I was distracted allย through history this morning. ย We were learning aboutย the Bronze Age. ย That was when the cave people startedย melting tin and copper and things to make bronze, so thatย they’d have something other than stones to work with. ย The Bronze Age people invented writing and the wheel. ย We looked at pictures of Bronze Age roundhouses andย longboats in our history book.

We carried on working on our own projects, I have startedย a new project, knitting a pig! ย I am following a patternย from a book about making toys.

Saturday 19 October

Today we visited The Big Draw! ย It was at a big city art gallery. ย I had a really good time. ย Me and Jude made self-portraits and still life drawings andย texture rubbings.ย  There were tables full of pieces ofย paper and crayons and boxes of pine cones and feathersย and leaves to draw.

After that they took us into a room and there were lots ofย children making a great big abstract drawing together, on aย huge piece of paper on the floor. ย There were lots of toyย cars and we dipped them in paint and then played withย them across the paper, making a drawing. ย It was a lot ofย fun, and there was a raffle to see who got to keep theย giant picture, but we didn’t win it. ย It was great fun, we had such a good time.

Sunday 20 Octoberย

We are having a half term holiday this week. I got upย early this morning and watched cartoons.

When the postย came there was a free catalogue of women’s clothes, so Iย took it out to the porch, cut out all the women and playedย with them. ย They were great paper dolls, but eventuallyย I took them outside to have them swim in the puddle, and they all fell apart. ย

I did some drawings of the Power Puff Girls! Bubbles isย my favourite because Blossom is bossy and Buttercup isย angry.

It’s a shame about Garth

For the whole chapter click here ๐Ÿ™‚

Tuesday 15 October

We swam for an hour today, and we returned some booksย but we didnโ€™t get any more out. ย It was breezy outsideย riding our bikes, we put cotton wool in our ears so weย didnโ€™t get ear ache after swimming. ย In English I have started reading a book called Carrieโ€™s War,ย about Carrie and her brother who are evacuated from London during theย Second World War. ย They live with a grumpy shop keeperย and his sister, and they make friends with a little boyย called Albert Sandwich.

After that I worked in my English workbook where Iย learned about paragraphs and comparisons.

For dinner Jude made “Hungarian potatoes” and pancakes. ย “Hungarian potatoes” has slices of potato, fried tomatoes andย onions and gravy and it’s all baked in the oven. ย I made aย coffee and syrup cake.

Wednesday 16 October

In science we learned how power stations store electricity,ย and that energy is always changing. ย We made experimentsย out of a knitting needle and a cork and a salt pot whichย we cut the end off of to demonstrate how a water millย works.

At lunchtime we had peanut butter and Marmite on toast. ย I like to make toast and put the margarine on straightย away, so that it melts in and gets really soft. ย Jude does itย like that too, and Dad says she puts too much margarineย on her toast. ย Mum likes her toast well done, and I likeย mine so it’s hardly toasted at all, hot but not brown, Judeย likes it to be medium toasted.

While we were eating we watched Cheers. ย Cheers is greatย because it’s funny. ย My favourite character is the womanย who is played by the mum in Matilda, she is really greatย when she gets angry and goes crazy. ย I can’t remember herย name. I really like the theme tune.

In needlework we learned cross stitch sewing. ย There areย lots of different ways to sew, and we practised half-crossย stitch and herringbone stitch. ย When we finished we stuckย them in our scrap books and cut out labels printed off theย computer and stuck them in too. ย We cut the labels outย in decorative ways to make our books interesting.

Jude made drawings when lessons were over, she is reallyย good at drawing cartoon people. ย I played with my dollsย and one of them broke in half because she fell while sheย was rock climbing. ย The other dolls were pretty worried butย it’s okay, because she was rushed to hospital and I Selotapedย her back together again.

Jude has dolls from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. ย She has aย Willow, a Buffy and an Angel doll. ย But I’m not supposedย to touch them, because they are very fragile, andย sometimes their arms fall off. ย Sometimes I do go and lookย at them though.

Thursday 17 October

This morning Jude was working on formulae for maths,ย which is all about triangles and circles and rectangles. ย I doย English while she does maths, and for English I had toย write a story! ย I wrote a story about a girl called Rakel who is supposedย to go on a bus ride, but she doesn’t, instead she goes intoย this cave with her friends and finds magic crystals. ย It allย goes wrong when something bad happens and they have toย run for it, and one of them, Garth, gets trapped and theyย have to leave him behind. ย Mum said that was a bit harsh,ย leaving Garth behind, and I did feel bad about that, butย that’s just a tragic part of the story. ย I didn’t know howย to end the story, so it doesn’t have an ending yet.

Small hands

Continued from yesterday ๐Ÿ™‚ :

Saturday 12 October

I went to music school and learned how to playย the theme tune to Rugrats on my keyboard! ย My friend Dana is reallyย good, and she showed me the songs she has been playing atย home. ย Virginia, who is my other friend, is learning toย play the clarinet, and when she has learned to play theย clarinet, she says she will learn to play the saxophone,ย like Lisa Simpson! The teacher played us some of his CDs,ย which he keeps in a big folder, like a photo album. ย Our teacher is called Arlo, and his assistant is called Lucas. ย Lucas said that Dana, Virginia and me always wear theย same colours, and he asked if we planned it that way. ย We laughed because we had never noticed that.

After keyboard lessons was music theory, which neverย makes much sense because most of the children areย naughty, but also because we are all learning differentย instruments, so it feels disconnected to learn about theoryย without my keyboard in the room. I would rather theyย showed me how to play the piano with two hands atย once, which is something I can’t fathom.

After music theory was choir, which I really like, I love toย sing really loud and they give you sheets of words toย lots of songs!

And after that there was drama, (Saturday drama club isย different from Thursday drama club) we are making aย production of Jack and the Beanstalk, and I am one of theย giant’s arms! ย We have a lot of songs to learn, and I am aย market seller at the beginning, before I become the giant’sย arms. ย I like playing drama games too. ย We play winkย murder which is a game where you have to stand in aย circle, and someone is the murderer, and if they wink atย you, you have to die really dramatically.

Monday 14 October

I got one hundred percent correct on my times table testย today! I had to do the fives, which are fun because theyย are easier than the others. ย After that I had typingย practice, but my fingers are too small to reach all the keys,ย so mum said I should wait for now and carry on learningย to type when Iโ€™m bigger.

I finished reading the book, Charlie and the Great Glassย Elevator! It was really funny. ย Charlie, his whole familyย and Willy Wonka went up in the flying elevator, but hisย gran gets frightened, which means Mr Wonka canโ€™t turnย around, so they go into space, and start orbiting the Earth,ย and they get mistaken for aliens and itโ€™s very funny. ย Thatโ€™s what I did in the morning, while mum was teachingย BODMAS to Jude. ย BODMAS is something to do with longย multiplication, or something. Luckily I donโ€™t have to learnย it for a couple of years. In the afternoon I did a mental maths test, but Iโ€™m notย very good at it. ย I donโ€™t like doing maths inside my headย without writing anything down, especially if Iโ€™m beingย timed. I know now that two, three, five, seven,ย eleven and thirteen are all prime numbers, but I canโ€™tย remember how to calculate a perimeter.

Jude did touch typing, she is up to level 2 now, and sheย read her reading book.

Punctuation and sponge-printed Christmas cards

continued from yesterday ๐Ÿ™‚ :

We also did English, and I learned about punctuationย and spellings.

We made Christmas cards this afternoon! We made stampsย out of sponges and vegetables and then we dipped them inย paint and printed onto card. ย We made snowmen andย Christmas tree and holly stamps, and we had lots ofย different coloured card. ย It was fun to start getting readyย for Christmas already! I don’t think it’s ever too early toย think about Christmas and to get organised.

We made a lot because we need to send them to all ourย family and friends. ย We couldn’t add baubles to the treesย on the cards today because the paint was still wet, but weย might be able to do that tomorrow.

I’m excited because the Saturday after next we are goingย to go to the Big Draw which is in town! That’s a drawingย festival full of activities for us to try.

At six o’clock I went to drama club in town. ย We areย making a production of The Billy Goats Gruff for the old people at the care homeย and it is a lot of fun. ย There are lots ofย songs to sing and not really any costumes, you have toย use your imagination. ย My friend Lydia is the littlest goat,ย and Benjamin is the medium sized goat, and I can’tย remember who the biggest goat is. ย There are only threeย goats and a troll in this story, and the rest of us sing. ย We are the chorus.

Friday 11 October

In history we are learning about the Neolithic people. ย Theyย are the modern cave men, from about 10,000 B.C., although nobodyย really knows how long ago. ย They made tools from stone,ย but they polished them, which the old stone age peopleย didn’t do. They also lived in villages and made pottery.

This was when they started growing crops instead ofย picking plants that grew all by themselves, and stoppedย being nomads.

I think it would be cool to be a nomad, just wanderingย around and finding food that’s grown by itself. ย Although,ย we did learn that living in houses gave the neolithic peopleย time to do arts and crafts, so I can see how that would beย fun too.

After lunch we worked on our projects. My project isย knitting squares to make a patchwork blanket. ย So far Iย have three blue ones, a stripey yellow one and a glitteryย purple one. ย Today I made a green one and a purple andย cream one.

Jude’s project is making a toy for a toddler, which sheย designed herself. She made this caterpillar out of fabric, andย then she stuffed it with dry peas which we got from theย health food shop. ย She is sewing on letters and numbers forย children to learn from, and a bell that jingles, to make itย happy.

Then later on I made dinner. Itโ€™s good practice. ย Iย followed all the instructions on the packets. ย I madeย broccoli, carrots, Linda McCartney sausages, chips and gravy. ย The broccoli and carrots were fresh, they needed chopping and washing,ย the other things were frozen, except the gravy granules,ย which come in a cardboard pot. ย The gravy is easyย to make, you measure it out with a spoon and boil theย water in a kettle. ย The sausages are tricky because if you don’t keep a careful eye on the grill they can quickly get overdone on one side.

After dinner we had soya desserts which come inย little pots.

Swimming like a frog

Chapter One of What Me and Jude Did While Everyone Else Was At School continues:

Tuesday 8 October

I am getting much better at breaststroke, so is Jude. ย Breaststroke is swimming like a frog. ย Sometimes I startย to sink, so I stand up, but I hardly did that at all today. ย When we go swimming there are not many other people atย the pool, but if you swim for a long time, which we didย today, a swimming class arrives, and they all line up besideย the pool and dive in together. ย It’s very impressive. ย I don’t know how to dive, I wonder if it makes water goย up your nose.

We went to the library after swimming, and borrowedย some more books. ย Jude got five books! I just got two. ย I got a book about dolphins and whales and sea creatures,ย and a book called Charlie and the Glass Elevator, which is the sequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I haven’tย read the first book, but I’ve seen the film, so I understandย what happens in the story.

When we got home we went down the lane to pickย blackberries from the hedgerows. ย This is fun because youย get pink fingers. ย It is a careful business, you need toย choose the ones which are shiny and dark purple, avoid theย red and green ones, which aren’t ripe yet, also avoid theย ones which look like they have been half eaten by waspsย or birds or spiders.

For cookery I made apple and blackberry pie, and Judeย made oat biscuits. ย We worked at the table together. ย Then we made beans on toast for dinner. ย Jude stirred theย beans while I put the margarine on the toast, and Mumย laid the table. ย If you don’t stir beans, they stick to theย bottom of the saucepan. ย We have a dark blue cooker andย a bright orange kitchen.

Wednesday 9 October

In science we learned that energy is everywhere, and weย learned about the energy in our bodies, in our blood and inย our brains and things.

I like to daydream that we are making important scientificย breakthroughs about the Sun, and that we have discoveredย that actually the Earth is slowly moving away from theย Sun! Or that there are actually two Suns! ย And nobodyย ever noticed because they are never in the sky at theย same time.

In the afternoon we did sewing! Mum showed us howย to do straight stitch and satin stitch, and we practised themย on little pieces of fabric. When I’m sewing I pretend I amย someone from Little house on the prairie, mending clothesย for someone. ย With satin stitch I sewed a circle in green, pink, blue and yellow on a white and green striped piece ofย fabric, and Jude sewed hers on a dark blue piece ofย corduroy.

Thursday 10 October

In the morning we usually get up early, have breakfastย and then I do the washing up, Jude walks our dog, Dmitri,ย and Mum sweeps the floors. ย We do those jobs as quicklyย as we can so that they’re all done in time for us toย watch Bewitched before lessons start.

Last time I did maths I thought I nearly understoodย mean, median and mode, but they were different todayย than last time I saw them. ย Median is the only one I canย remember. At least I’m not doing long division, which isย what Jude was studying this morning.

Reading David Copperfield and painting like van Gogh

Thursday 3 October

This morning we read some more David Copperfieldย  and then had a spelling test. ย Chapter Two is called ย “I Observe” and David talks about his earliest memoriesย of his mother and Peggotty, their servant. ย It is veryย funny.

In the afternoon we made paintings. I painted a sceneย with sail boats by Matisse, with lots of dabs of pink andย blue. ย Jude painted A Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh. ย I really like Matisse and van Goghโ€™s paintings, theyย make everything so beautiful and colourful. ย We paintedย all afternoon, at the table. ย It takes a long time toย paint in dabs and patches, so we havenโ€™t finished ourย paintings yet.

Friday 4 October

In history we learned about the Stone Age. ย Nobody knows very much about the Stone Age, because it happened such a long time ago. ย Luckily the people of that time made paintings in caves for us to refer to. ย Mum read about the Stone Age to us, and then we answered questions from the book, and drew pictures of the cave drawings. ย Most of the cave drawings were of animals.

At lunchtime we had crackers and watched a program about antiques, which we all like, especially Jude. We have our favourite antiques experts, and it’s fun to see how ordinary things can be worth a lot of money.

After lunch we carried on painting our reproductions. I found it difficult to fit every detail into the picture.ย

Saturday 5th October

Today Mum, Jude and me went on the bus to the museumย and art gallery in town. They had Stone Age artefacts inย glass cases. ย It is fascinating to see little pieces of the pastย all dug up from underground, forgotten for years and nowย sitting in a display box.

The museum also had an exhibition of different sorts ofย shoes from history, baby shoes, dancing shoes, workingย boots. ย I liked the red glittery dancing shoes, and the videoย of the fashion show. ย Some of the shoes were really oldย and fragile.

Near the entrance of the museum there was a giantย elephant made out of cardboard, which was amazing! We went in the gift shop and looked at all the souvenirs, they had books and pencils and old coins and toys from history.

Monday 7 October

Today we had separate lessons because Jude is three years older than me, so she needs to learn different maths. Jude and Mum worked downstairs on ratios and long multiplication, while I worked upstairs. ย I read my Sabrina reading book, practised typing on the computer, and then practised playing music on the keyboard.

I was trying to learn a song called Beautiful Brown Eyes,ย but it didn’t sound right. ย So far I can only play musicย with my right hand, which is on the treble clef. ย Hopefullyย one day I will be able to play with both hands at theย same time.

In the afternoon it was my turn to do maths. ย I studiedย averages, which is mean, median and mode. ย I found thisย difficult because it’s really complicated. ย Median I findย easier to remember, because it sounds a bit like “middle” andย that’s what it’s all about. ย The other two are somethingย different.

Jude did typing and read her reading book, The Worryย Website. ย She doesn’t want to learn to play the keyboard,ย so she didn’t play any music.

What Me And Jude Did While Everyone Else Was At School

Chapter One: ย I left school aged 9ยผ

Tuesday 1 October

This morning we cycled to the swimming baths. ย Weย have decided to go swimming once a week, Mum,ย Jude and me. ย The curtains in the changing roomsย were blue and yellow, and we needed a pound coinย each for the lockers. ย I always try to pack my clothesย away with my shoes at the bottom, and my towel onย the top. ย

Mum is teaching us to swim the breaststroke,ย you have to keep your fingers together and push theย water behind you, at the same time you bend andย straighten your knees. ย Mum said to picture how aย frog swims. ย We swam for about an hour and then we went to theย library. ย

The library is a really comfortable place toย browse books and read. ย Thereโ€™s a whole section ofย children’s non-fiction and fiction, I once found aย really good bouncy ball on the floor near the toddlerย books. ย Today I found a Sabrina the Teenage Witchย novel for my new reading book, and a book aboutย dogs. ย I needed a new reading book because I finishedย The BFG on Sunday. ย Jude chose The Worry Websiteย by Jacqueline Wilson, one of her favourite authors.

At home in the afternoon we read David Copperfield together. ย We each have a copy, and we take it in turnsย to read it aloud. ย Iโ€™ve written my name in my copy. ย David Copperfield is a really long book by Charlesย Dickens, we started reading it the other day, whenย Mum got us each a copy from the Heritage Centre. ย We finished the first chapter today, it is reallyย interesting. ย It starts off when he is born, and thenย carries on.

Wednesday 2 October

This morning we learned that all energy comes fromย the Sun. ย Plants use the Sun’s energy to grow, and soย when we eat plants we are eating the energy the Sunย gave the plants.

We had a needlework lesson this afternoon. ย Mumย showed us how to hem, and how to sew running stitch.ย I really like sewing, we used little pieces of fabric scrapsย to practise, and then we stuck them in our purpleย scrap books which is where we record our sewing.

Jude finished her sewing first and she used the rest ofย her lesson time to flick me with elastic from the sewingย box. ย This was annoying but it was funny too. ย I carriedย on sewing and finished my running stitches, Jude saidย she was impressed by my reflexes.

Explain

Chapter 8 continues:

***************************

โ€œExplain. ย How is this the only waste you personally made this week?โ€

Luke explained.

โ€œI told my mum not to buy the vegetables an’ fruit in plastic bags an’ nets an’ trays ’cause we don’t need ’em, we just throw ’em away as soon as we get home. So I jus’ put it all loose in the trolley; I laid it on top of a soft bag so it dint get bruises, and then I put it in our own bags when we paid for it.โ€

The fact that the bags to which he referred were actually pillowcases was an irrelevant detail unnecessary to divulge.

โ€œOk, good, loose fruit and veg โ€“ no need for packaging. ย What else?โ€

โ€œI told Mum to get the loose lentils and raisins that you can weigh, instead of the ones in packets, and we put it in our bags we took with us what we can re-use.โ€

He paused, waiting for her to acknowledge receipt of this information.

โ€œGo on,โ€ she urged.

โ€œI told Mum to get me the porridge oats what comes in jus’ a paper bag instead of cereal what’s in boxes and plastic bags. ย An’ we got flour an’ sugar in paper bags an’ bread in paper bags instead of plastic; an’ peanut butter in a glass jar with a metal lid; an’ vinegar an’ ketchup an’ apple juice an’ sunflower oil in glass bottles with metal lids โ€“ but we ‘aven’t finished all of ’em so I on’y brought the juice bottle today โ€“ an’ two tins of beans. ย That’s everythin’ I ate an’ I made my Mum choose glass an’ tins because they can be recycled over an’ over forever an’ ever, back into bottles an’ food tins, but plastic is bad an’ can on’y be cycled to things like plastic bricks an’ stuff that can’t be recycled in the end.โ€

Mrs Tebbut was lost for words. ย He had read the printouts. ย He had done the work. ย Impressively. ย She looked at the three paper bags, one glass bottle and two baked beans tins and was amazed at how simple it could actually be.

โ€œWell done Luke,โ€ she said, โ€œvery well done indeed.โ€

At the end of the day when everyone else was going to get their coats, Mrs Tebbut called Luke to her desk.

โ€œGood work today Luke,โ€ she said, โ€œis this something you’ve been concerned about for a while? ย I mean before we started our project?โ€

Luke was unused to his teacher’s friendly voice being directed at him but he saw no harm in indulging her.

โ€œYeah. ย Since I saw Spiker caught in the plastic rings an’ all the litter what hurts the animals. ย An’ since so many people are jus’ stupid to keep droppin’ the litter I thought the best thing to do is to make shops stop sellin’ it, then there’d be nothin’ to drop, ‘cept maybe paper bags but that won’t hurt no one and it won’t last long. ย So I’m teachin’ my Mum not to buy things with plastic.โ€

โ€œWell, Luke, that’s wonderful, I’m very impreโ€ฆ.โ€

โ€œAn’ I’m makin’ new things out of old things as well,โ€ being impressive was new to Luke โ€“ he couldn’t stop now, โ€œso I’m recyclin’ ’em myself and I’m reducin’ the buyin’ of new things ’cause of fixin’ things and makin’ new ones out of old ones.โ€

Mrs Tebbut smiled.

โ€œReally? ย What are you making?โ€

โ€œAt the moment,โ€ he said proudly, โ€œI’m knittin’ a blanket for my pet lamb to keep ‘im warm on chilly nights.โ€

โ€œWonderful! ย And are you using recycled yarn from an unravelled jumper?โ€

โ€œKind of, but no, not yarn. ย Strips of material.โ€

She looked confused so he tried to explain.

โ€œI got the idea from me Nan’s magazine ’bout makin’ rag rugs by cuttin’ old material into strips an’ knottin’ ’em together to make long long strings of it an’ then knittin’ with it. It’ll make a thick, soft blanket for Squirt to sleep on.โ€

โ€œFantastic! ย What material are you using? ย What are you cutting up?โ€

Luke was glad she asked because he’d put a lot of thought into that decision. ย He answered with the quiet confidence of a wise person enlightening a complete beginner.

โ€œI decided the warmest stuff would be what blankets are made of and I found two big blankets in the airing cupboard what nobody was usin’ so I used ’em. ย I’m nearly finished now.โ€

Mrs Tebbut smiled again.

โ€œYou’ve got a good heart Luke,โ€ she said, โ€œoff you go. ย Have a nice weekend, I’ll see you Monday.โ€

Luke, almost overwhelmed by the unfamiliar sensation of being approved of, went to get his coat.

School Project

Chapter 8 continues:

***************************

At Besco’s Luke watched her closely with his project in mind. ย To Mum it seemed like every time she reached for something he said,

โ€œNo! ย Not that. ย Get this one!โ€

She found it very trying but at the same time was impressed with her son’s commitment to the project and didn’t want to curb his enthusiasm for anything school-related. ย She bit her tongue and cooperated with most his suggestions.

At the checkout, when the lady asked if she’d like any bags, Luke spoke out before sheย could answer in the affirmative.

โ€œNo thanks. ย It’s very bad to get plastic bags. ย They make pollution. ย You should ban ’em.โ€ ย Then he put his pile of pillowcases onto the end of the checkout and started filling one with loose vegetables. ย Mum flashed the checkout lady an embarrassed smile and said,

โ€œSchool project.โ€

When the day came for the presentations to the class, Luke, because his surname began with W, was one of the last to present. ย His peers were getting restless. ย They had already sat through twenty seven similar presentations in which they were shown similar empty packets, cartons and bottles being thrown out that week by each family. ย Those to be recycled included cereal boxes with their internal plastic bags, plastic milk bottles, plastic ketchup bottles, plastic shampoo bottles, Tetra Paks, glass wine bottles, beer bottles, plastic pop bottles, drink cans, food tins and the like. ย Those to go to landfill included toothpaste tubes, toothbrushes, brillo pads, polystyrene food trays, plastic straws and crisp packets. ย Mrs Tebbut herself was having trouble staying awake at this stage and decided that next year she would get the class to work on a single collective presentation for a school assembly.

Luke waited for Susan Vickers to take her family’s waste off the presentation table and then he walked to the front and stood awkwardly facing his class.

โ€œOk Luke, how have you reduced waste in your household this week?โ€ asked Mrs Tebbut.

Luke reached into his bag and put onto the table three paper bags, one glass 1 litre bottle and two empty baked beans tins. ย He looked at the class and spoke loudly to conceal his nervousness.

โ€œThis is my waste for this week. ย The yellow and blue paper bag what had oats in will be recycled; the brown paper bread bags will go onย the compost; the bottle and the baked beans tins will be recycled.โ€

Relieved that it was over he waited for Mrs Tebbut to tell him to stand down. ย She didn’t.

โ€œThat can’t be all,โ€ she said, โ€œI told you to show the class how much waste your household had produced and how you’d helped to reduce it.โ€

โ€œI did.โ€

โ€œThis is all your family’s waste for a whole week?โ€

โ€œThis is the reduced waste what I made ’em reduce. ย I don’t think it’s fair to include the things I told ’em not to buy. ย They’re not my fault.โ€

โ€œLuke, that wasn’t the project. ย You’ve misunderstood.โ€

โ€œI’ve done it fair. ย It’s not fair to say I dint do well makin’ my family’s waste smaller if my family won’t do what I tell ’em. ย It’s on’y fair to see what waste was made from choices I madeย ’em make.โ€

Mrs Tebbut couldn’t argue with that.

Mrs Tebbut continued.

โ€œNow can anybody think of ways in which we could reduce our waste in the first place?โ€

Several hands shot up.

โ€œYes, Andrew.โ€

โ€œDraw on both sides of the paper.โ€

โ€œVery good. ย Yes, Katia.โ€

โ€œStick a note on your door that says ‘no junk mail’.โ€

โ€œGood thinking. ย Yes, Simon.โ€

โ€œGet your shoes re-soled instead of buying new ones.โ€

โ€œOoh, yes, well done Simon. ย Repair things instead of throwing them out. ย Good one. ย Ok, well done, you’re all thinking now. ย What about the choices we make when we buy things like food. ย We have to buy food, but how can we reduce waste before we even get it home?โ€

The class went quiet again. ย Everyone was thinking but they weren’t quite sure what she was after.

โ€œI’m thinking packaging here,โ€ she explained, โ€œwe eat the food but we throw away the packaging. ย How can we reduce that waste?โ€

โ€œBuy food with recyclable packaging!โ€ Butler shouted out.

โ€œYes, if we must, but what would be even better?โ€

Joe’s eyes suddenly lit up and he opened his mouth as if to speak but didn’t. ย Mrs Tebbut noticed.

โ€œJoe? ย Did you want to say something?โ€

โ€œBuy stuff without packaging,โ€ he said quietly.

There were a few snickers.

โ€œHow ya gonna do that? ย Everything comes in packets!โ€ someone scoffed.

Joe went red and looked down at his hands. ย Mrs Tebbut frowned.

โ€œQuiet! ย Pay attention to Joe, he’s got the right idea!โ€ She turned to Joe, โ€œwell done, that’s exactly what I was looking for. ย We need to avoid the waste coming into our homes in the first place by choosing things with the least amount of packaging, and even no packaging when possible. ย Kenny – see me at the end of class!โ€

Mrs Tebbut went on to explain their class project: a week on Friday they would all make a presentation to the class in which they would explain how they had reduced waste in their household. ย As visual aids they were to bring with them everything being thrown away in their house that week (after it had been cleaned if necessary) and tell the class where that rubbish was headed: recycling or landfill. ย She gave them printouts which told them all about recycling.

********

After tea on shopping night, Luke was rummaging through the kitchen drawers.

โ€œCome on Luke if you want to come, I want to get this over with,โ€ said Mum.

She hated shopping.

โ€œI’m coming …โ€ said Luke, but didn’t.

โ€œWhat are you looking for?โ€ asked Mum.

โ€œThe shopping bags. ย I thought they were in here.โ€

โ€œSo did I. ย Oh, I don’t know. ย I think I put them in the wash. ย I don’t know where they are now. ย Never mind, just leave it. ย Let’s go!โ€

โ€œHang on!โ€ said Luke and he rushed upstairs.

Mum picked up the car keys and headed for the door.

โ€œIf you don’t come now Luke, I’m going without you!โ€ ย And she went outside.

Just before she released the handbrake Luke opened the passenger door and climbed in.

โ€œWhat are you doing with those?โ€ Mum asked with alarm as she looked at a large crumpled pile of flower-print and cartoon superhero pillowcases on his lap.

โ€œBags,โ€ he said, โ€œwe need reusable bags.โ€

Mum inhaled deeply, checked the mirror and reversed out of the drive.

Chapter Eight:

Luke Walker and the recycling

*****

โ€œHa ha ha ha,โ€ Luke laughed, โ€œstop it! I’m nearly finished! Let me finish!โ€

Luke was sitting on the straw in Curly’s shed, trying to knit a blanket for Squirt.

Curly had given birth to Little Squirt a few days after she arrived at her new home and he was the most playful, affectionate little chap Luke had ever met. ย Curly hadn’t let Luke come near him at first but after a while she let Squirt go to him.

โ€œHey! ย I nearly dropped another stitch! ย Ok, that’s it! I’m putting it away. ย I’ll have to finishย it at home.โ€

Luke preferred to do his knitting in the shed on his plot because at home Jared teased him for it. ย He had laughed when Luke first asked Nan to teach him.

โ€œKnitting? ย That’s what girls do! ย You wish you were a girl don’t you Luke?โ€

โ€œIt’s jus’ like makin’ knots at Scouts Jared! ย Don’t you make knots at Scouts?โ€

โ€œYeah โ€“ knots are useful, for camping and sailing and stuff boys do.โ€

โ€œAnd knittin’ is turnin’ string into material to make blankets or mats or clothes or tentsย or anythin’!โ€

He believed an outlaw should have the skills to make his own things and be self-sufficient. ย Knitting was a useful skill. ย Nan had been very happy to teach him.

Luke put the half-made blanket back in his bag and played with Squirt until it was time to go home for tea. ย He had to be home promptly today because it was Mum’s shopping night and he needed to go with her for his school project.

****

This half term’s topic was The Environment and Mrs Tebbut had started by talking to them about rubbish, waste and plastic pollution. ย This was of great interest to Luke.

On the board she wrote:

Reduce, Re-use, Recycle

โ€œThis week we are going to think about how we can reduce waste by the simple choicesย we make in our lives,โ€ she began. โ€œAlthough the amount of rubbish being recycled in this country has increased in recent years, the amount being sent to landfill is also on the increase. ย In England, we only recycle about 44% of household waste when in fact 80% of it is recyclable. ย This means we all need to try a little bit harder.โ€

โ€œOr a lot harder,โ€ Luke mouthed to Joe.

โ€œSo today I’m going to tell you about The Three Rs: Reduce, Re-use, Recycle. ย Have any of you heard of this before?โ€

Lots of blank faces and shaking of heads.

โ€œOk, well the idea is that, althoughย recycling is very important, we should first try to reduce the amount of stuff we buy in the first place by holding on to the stuff we’ve already got for as long as possible – taking care of it and getting it repaired instead of throwing it away.

โ€œThen, once we have really worn out ourย stuff and it can’t be repaired anymore, before we throw it out for recycling we should try to think of ways to reuse it. ย Old clothes, for example, could be turned into cleaning rags.

โ€œAnd finally, when we can no longer find a use for something, we should recycle it.โ€

โ€œInteresting,โ€ thought Luke.

Wide-eyed Joe

Chapter 7 continues (For the first 6 chapters click here ๐Ÿ™‚ย )

*************************

“….ย She belongs to ‘erself. I think she should be allowed to keep belongin’ to ‘erself, don’t you?โ€ ย He looked at Joe earnestly.

Joe looked back, wide eyed.

โ€œYeah, I do.โ€

Luke smiled, Joe was with him. ย But now he really had to think. ย Where would the sheep be safe? ย If they just left her to wander, someone else was bound to discover her and return her to the farm. ย No, he couldn’t let that happen. ย He had to get her to a place of safety where the farmer wouldn’t find her. ย Joe gently stroked the sheep’s forehead. ย Luke wasย thinking hard. ย There had to be a way. ย There was always a way if you thought hard enough. ย And then it came to him.

โ€œI’ve got it!โ€ said Luke, โ€œI know how we can save her!โ€

โ€œWhat? What will we do?โ€ asked Joe eagerly.

โ€œYou wait here with her,โ€ Luke instructed, โ€œkeep ‘er here, out of sight. ย I’ve got to go somewhere and I’ll be back quick as I can.โ€

โ€œWhere are you going?โ€ asked Joe, a little nervous about having sole custody of the refugee.

โ€œDon’t worry, I’ll be quick,โ€ Luke assured him as he turned to run back along the laneย towards the village.

Joe continued to stroke the sheep, telling her softly that it would be ok, that Luke had thought of something and he wouldn’t let her down. ย Obviously comforted by this, she resumed munching the grass.

It started to rain. Just a few drops at first and then it settled in to a steady drizzle.

โ€œHurry up,โ€ thought Joe as he became gradually wetter.

The sheep didn’t seem to mind. ย Eventually, after almost an hour by Joe’s reckoning (seventeen and a half minutes), Luke returned. ย He was smiling and had with him a piece of rope.

โ€œWhere ‘ave you been? What are we gonna do?โ€ Joe asked as Luke tied the rope carefully around the sheep’s neck so that he could lead her.

โ€œI’ve got a place where we can take ‘er,โ€ Luke told him, โ€œcome on.โ€

The rain ensured their independence by keeping other people indoors. ย They walked back half way along the lane until they came to the back entrance of the allotments. ย Luke opened the gate with a key and they went in. ย He led his old friend and his new friend past many well-kept plots full of rows of cabbages and turnips andย carrots and leeks and all sorts of plants that Luke didn’t recognise. ย The sheep was keen to try a few.

โ€œNo! Stop ‘er!โ€ Luke half-shouted as she bent her head to some turnip tops.

Joe stopped her just in time and the boys quickened their pace. ย After a while the plots began to look a little untidy and, the further they walked, the more unkempt they became. ย They stopped alongside Luke’s dad’s plot which was one of the unkempt because he hadn’t had it very long.

โ€œHere we are!โ€ said Luke happily to the sheep, โ€œwelcome to your new home Curly.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ said Joe.

โ€œYeah!โ€ said Luke, โ€œI think it suits her.โ€ ย Joe shook his head.

โ€œNot the name, the place! ย Won’t your dad go mad?โ€

โ€œWhy would he?โ€ Luke asked, a little irritated that Joe was being so negative.

ย Then Luke realised that from where he was standing, Joe couldn’t see what he and Curly could see.

โ€œNo, not here,โ€ he said, โ€œthere!โ€

And he pointed to something behind his dad’s ramshackle shed.

Joe stepped forward to look. ย The plot behind Luke’s dad’s plot had been abandoned some time ago and was quite overgrown. ย The former tenant had erected post and rail fencing all around it so that she could keep her Shetland pony there. ย And there was a big shed that she’d used as a stable. ย Luke beamed.

โ€œThis is my plot!โ€

Joe’s jaw dropped.

โ€œBut how? โ€ฆ. When?โ€

โ€œThat’s where I went. ย To the ‘lotment committee man’s house. ย To rent this ‘lotment.โ€

โ€œBut how โ€ฆ I mean, don’t that cost loadsa money?โ€

Joe knew the answer to his questionย almost before he’d finished asking it. ย Luke was so happy as he led Curly to her new home.

โ€œWon’t ‘ave time for bike rides now anyway,โ€ he said.

Quiet boys in a quiet lane

The lane was quiet, the boys were quieter, until Luke noticed something. ย As they approached the stile that led to the meadow that was crossed by the stream that was bridged by the bridge on which the boys had planned to play Pooh sticks, Luke saw a sheep.

The sheep was munching the long grass in front of the field gate next to the stile. ย There were no sheep in the meadow at that time but Luke knew that sometimes there were. ย He could only assume that this sheep had got separated from the rest when they were being moved to another field.

โ€œA lost sheep!โ€ said Joe when he looked up.

โ€œYeah,โ€ said Luke, their discord forgotten. ย They approached her slowly so as not to startle her.

โ€œWhat should we do?โ€ whispered Joe.

โ€œI don’t know,โ€ said Luke.

โ€œI bet it belongs to Manor Farm,โ€ Joeย guessed, โ€œI know they’ve got sheep.โ€

Luke was deep in thought.

โ€œMaybe,โ€ he said after a while, โ€œbut we can’t really be sure.โ€

โ€œWe should prob’ly go and tell the farmer at Manor Farm, then he could come and see it. ย I think he’d know if it was one of his.โ€

Luke took his water bottle out of his lunch box.

โ€œMaybe,โ€ he said again as he tipped what was left in the bottle onto the mud, โ€œbut then again, he’s prob’ly got hundreds of sheep and they prob’ly all look the same to ‘im.โ€

He rubbed his hand in the wet mud and then wiped it gently over the red dye mark on the sheep’s back.

โ€œAnd it would be wrong to hand ‘er over to the wrong person.โ€

โ€œWhy are you doin’ that?โ€ asked Joe.

โ€œJus’ coolin’ ‘er down. Wet mud really cools ’em down,โ€ Luke explained, โ€œdon’t want ‘er to be hot an’ bothered.โ€

Since it was March, Joe was unconvinced by this explanation. ย His friend was clearly up to something and he had a good idea what it might be.

โ€œYou can’t keep it Luke,โ€ he said firmly, โ€œit don’t belong to you.โ€

โ€œAn’ who does she belong to? ย We don’t ezzactly know do we?โ€

โ€œThat mark you just covered …โ€

โ€œWhat mark? ย I can’t see no mark! ย Can you?โ€

โ€œNot now, no.โ€

โ€œNo. ย There’s on’y one thing we do know.โ€

โ€œWhat’s that?โ€

โ€œThat whoever she does belong to wants to kill ‘er! ย Do you want to give ‘er to someone who will kill ‘er? Would you do that Joe? ย Would you?โ€

Luke was trying to keep it to a whisper so as not to frighten the sheep, but his hushed tones were still fierce.

โ€œWell, you don’t actually know that,โ€ Joe said cautiously.

โ€œDon’t I? ย Why do farmers keep animals? ย Is it ’cause they love ’em? ย Is it ’cause they want to play with ’em and cuddle ’em?โ€

Joe shook his head.

โ€œNo,โ€ Luke agreed, โ€œthey keep ’em to make money out of ’em, and they make money out of ย ’em by sellin’ ’em for meat.โ€

Joe couldn’t argue with that. ย He nodded.

โ€œSo what can we do?โ€ he asked.

Luke continued.

โ€œHere is a brave sheep who has prob’ly bin hidin’ from the farmer for days or weeks. ย And he prob’ly hasn’t even noticed she’s missin’; or he has noticed but he’s given up lookin’ for ‘er. ย So she’s free. ย She belongs to ‘erself. ย I think she should be allowed to keep belongin’ to ‘erself, don’t you?โ€ ย He looked at Joe earnestly.

Disappointment

Chapter 7 continues (For the first 6 chapters click here ๐Ÿ™‚ย )

*********

Twenty two minutes later he suffered aย bitter disappointment. In truth Dad hadn’t been surprised to learn that the blue bike Luke had set his heart on a year ago wasn’t there anymore, but he’d assumed Luke would happily choose a different one from the same shop. ย But Luke wouldn’t even look at a different one. ย He wanted the blue one. ย It was perfect. ย He could describe every detail of it and why it was perfect in every detail. ย For this reason the bike shop man knew which make and model he was talking about and looked it up on his computer. ย He said he could order another one, especially for Luke. It would take two weeks to get there. ย Luke smiled with relief.

โ€œYes please,โ€ he said.

He’d waited a whole year, what was another two weeks?

By the time they got back home he was feeling much better and cheerfully returned his money to the safety of his money box. ย Just two weeks – then he’d have it for sure. ย It wasย ordered. ย The order was in his name. ย Just two weeks more.

Luke sat in his room and drew a grid of fourteen squares. ย In each square he wrote a day of the week. ย At the end of every day he put a big red cross through one of the squares. ย When there were fourteen red crosses it would be time to go and get his bike. ย He could think of nothing else. ย He could talk of nothing else. ย To tell the truth, even his devoted friend Joe was getting a little tired of it.

It was the thirteenth day, Friday afternoon. ย The boys were sitting at either end of their desk, doing their sums. ย At least they were supposed to be doing their sums. ย In actual fact Joe was drawing dinosaurs and Luke was daydreaming about how much faster than Butler’s bike his new bike would be.

โ€œHe won’t even be able to keep up with me,โ€ he chuckled, โ€œI’ll be so fast that when I pass ‘im he won’t even know it was me. ย I’ll jus’ be a blur to ‘im!โ€

โ€œMm,โ€ Joe nodded.

He’d stopped listening half an hour earlier but it was easier to nod along than admit that he’d lost interest. ย Joe was a ‘path of least resistance’ sort of boy. ย However, by the end of the afternoon, when they were walking home from school, he couldn’t help expressing his wish to change the subject. ย Luke was more than a little affronted.

โ€œOh I’m sorry, ‘ave I bin borin’ you?โ€ he said in mock apology, โ€œI wun’t want to bore you with somethin’ as borin’ ‘n’ unint’restin’ as a new bike! ย I’m sorry to bother you with the unint’restin’ information that it took me a whole year to save up for it! ย I’m sorry I got so excited ’bout somethin’ so borin’!โ€

An awkward silence followed during whichย the friends walked at opposite edges of the country lane. ย They had been given permission to walk home without adult accompaniment as long as they stayed together. ย They therefore kept pace with each other whilst keeping as far apart as the width of the narrow road allowed. ย Joe looked at his shoes. ย Luke looked straight ahead.
