Chapter 18 of Velma the Vegan Vampire continues from Friday:
She glided almost invisible along the floor until she reached the cells. Muriel’s slippers were outside the third cell. Velma slipped under its door. A very tired-looking Muriel was sitting on a bench attached to the wall. Velma moved swiftly under the bench before becoming herself again. It was cramped under there.
“Muriel,” she whispered. “Don’t look down. Look up, look vacant, as if you’re talking to yourself.”
Muriel smiled vacantly, “Velma, they arrested me,” she whispered dreamily.
“I see that. Have they charged you?”
“No, but they threatened to. Said I was an accessory to murder.”
“They must have been listening to our phones,” Velma told her, “they’ve been following me, almost caught me.”
“Me too!” she said, faking a happy grin, “except for the almost part.”
“Have you got a solicitor?”
“They’re sending one. That’s why I’m in here. I told them I won’t talk without a solicitor.”
“Good.”
“I’m scared. They said I could get life in prison!”
“You weren’t an accessory. You weren’t involved at all. Just knowing me is not a crime – I don’t think. No comment your way through it. You’ll be okay.”
Someone on the other side of the door put the key in the lock and turned it.
“Velma!”
“I’ll be back!” Velma was mist again before the door opened and she followed Muriel as she was led out of the cell.
The Velma-Mist moved along outside the other cell doors, sliding under the one with tatty black plimsolls outside it. She immediately slid back out again after discovering that Andy isn’t the only person who wears tatty black plimsolls. The last door, with wellies outside it, was Andy’s cell.
Again Velma positioned herself under the bench before reverting to womanhood. Andy was pacing.
“Andy,” she whispered. “I’m under the bench but don’t look at me.”
Andy jumped, and then continued to pace, looking at his feet. “Now they’re threatening accessory to murder!” he whispered, “I guess they finally cracked the encryption on my message.”
“No. I think they’ve Enemy of the Stated us. They arrested Muriel too. And I only just got away.”
“Oh no! So they did tap my phone? But we were careful not to talk about any of it on the phone.”
“I don’t think so. I don’t think they have to bug your phone to listen to you do they?”
“They don’t have to put an actual bug in your phone, no, but they can get into your phone by emailing spyware to it.”
“What about when they want to listen to everybody’s phones?”
“Oh, you’re talking mass surveillance?”
“Like in the film, yes.”
“Yeah, they can listen to everyone’s phones as if they’re microphones. You don’t have to be on a call. The phone doesn’t even need to be switched on! They can listen to all the phone networks and if they hear a word they’re looking for – like for example, vampire …”
They heard loud voices outside the door.
“Stick with no comment interviews, you’ve done nothing wrong. When you get out, I’ll be with Monty.”
“Velma – where’s Sammy?” Unable to resist, Andy looked under the bench, just as a key turned in the lock and Velma re-misted. “Great,” he mumbled, “I wish I could do that.”
