Zoe Rosenberg, a 23-year-old student and animal rights activist is being sent to prison for rescuing four chickens from slaughter. She has health problems and will be harshly treated in there. Please help her.

Zoe will soon be incarcerated in Sonoma County, CA for the “crime” of rescuing animals from abuse at a Perdue-owned slaughterhouse. All along, this was a political prosecution; instead of prosecuting Perdue for documented animal cruelty, the District Attorney punished Zoe for exposing it.

The District Attorney charged Zoe with a ramped-up felony conspiracy charge to increase her maximum sentence and forced her to wear a GPS ankle monitor for over 20 months while awaiting trial. When trial finally arrived, the court severely restricted Zoe’s ability to present evidence of the animal cruelty she had documented at Perdue and reported to authorities before the rescue. The jury only heard a small sliver of the story and Zoe was ultimately convicted and sentenced to jail.

Her imminent incarceration isn’t just unjust; it is life-threatening. Zoe has a serious chronic illness that requires constant medical attention. Being deprived of her freedom and medical care while in jail could kill her.

We demand her immediate release. Compassion should not be criminalized, and it certainly shouldn’t be a death sentence.

Please sign to fight for Zoe and everyone else who bravely makes compassion their first priority. Compassion is not a crime. Don’t let them make it one.

Tell the UK Gov to Protect Crustaceans Now

Cruelty to Crustaceans

https://crustaceancompassion.good.do/closetheloophole/

When Crustacean Compassion began back in 2016, it was with an aim to protect these fragile animals from pain and suffering. They began their campaign to get them included in the animal welfare legislation, and since then over 65,000 AMAZING supporters have joined them and signed their petition calling on the UK government to include decapod crustaceans in the Animal Welfare Act 2006 (England and Wales).

Will a new government mean new protections?

The last UK government legally recognised that decapods could feel pain, and historically included them in the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act 2022 but… that is where they stopped. So Crustacean Compassion are calling on you again, to tell the new Labour government to act now and protect decapods. With this new government we have an excellent chance of getting decapods the protection they deserve, but we need your help.

PLEASE PLEASE SIGN THIS NEW PETITION – IT ONLY TAKES A MOMENT

What does the General Election mean for Crustacean Compassion?

On Wednesday May 22, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak surprised everyone by announcing that a General Election will be held on Thursday 04 July. In doing so, he fired the starting pistol on a six-week campaign where politicians will criss-cross the country vying for your votes.

Animal welfare always ranks high in the list of priorities for voters, and Crustacean Compassion will be working hard to ensure that the voice of decapods is heard throughout. These special animals were recognised as sentient in UK law over two years ago, but since then progress on increasing their legal protections and improving their treatment in the food industry has stalled.

What happens next?
Crustacean Compassion has already written to the political party leaders to seek their support and next week will be contacting all the candidates directly to ask them to support these pledges.

But they need your help. Watch out for updates on their social media channels for details on how you can help us reach as many candidates as possible and make sure that decapods have the strongest possible voice in the new parliament.

They’ll also be sharing more information about how you can get involved with this campaign in your local area.

Their new campaign to ban live sales
They’ve launched this new petition to show the new government that decent people in the UK support a full ban on the live decapods being sold as food. Every day in the UK animals like crabs, lobsters, prawns and crayfish are sold alive to the untrained public to be killed and cooked at home. This causes EXTREME pain and suffering to these fragile, sentient animals.

Please sign the petition today and share far and wide.

The time is NOW!

A message from Crustacean Compassion:

We wanted to provide a quick update on the Sentience Bill ahead of today’s debate. This afternoon at 14:30, the House of Lords grand committee meet for the second time this month to continue reviewing suggested amendments to the bill.

Two particularly important amendments being debated today are calling for invertebrates, like crabs and lobsters, to be included in the bill. If the Lords agree that these amendments should be made, then we’re a big step closer to getting these animals protected!

At the time of critical debates such as this, it is essential to show how much support there is for this issue! Make sure to show your support today by completing our two actions. They only take a few minutes and make a massive difference:

(1) Add your photo or video to our selfie wall #SelfiesForSentience  (you don’t have to live in the UK to do this!)

(2) Write to your MP to keep this issue top of the agenda

Don’t forget to share on social media too so others can take part!

The debate can be watched on Parliament TV here. You can read the two amendments tabled to include decapod crustaceans via the links below:

1. Amendment made by Baroness Hayman of Ullock

2. Amendment made by Baroness Jones of Moulsecoomb

Be a voice (and a face!) for these animals…

Join our Selfie Wall now and ask your MP to speak out for decapod crustaceans. Please don’t let these animals be ‘forgotten’ in the Sentience Bill!

Thank you so much.

ACT NOW!

vegan, animals, animal rights, animal cruelty, animal welfare,

URGENT! PLEASE HELP!

Excruciatingly Cruel slaughter methods:

  • Boiling alive
  • Freezing alive before boiling alive
  • Freshwater drowning
  • Carving and dismemberment while fully conscious

These things happen legally because crustaceans and molluscs are not included in the Animal Welfare Act.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell the UK government to end these cruel practices and make it mandatory to treat these wild animals humanely – WITHOUT PAIN AND SUFFERING! – it will only take you a couple of minutes and it has to be NOW because they deciding right now whether to include crustaceans in the Sentience Bill and the Animal Welfare Act.

You don’t have to be from the UK to do this. PLEASE protect these animals by joining Crustacean Compassion’s selfie wall

And/or signing their petition.

No one has clicked these links in my previous posts – I pray to God you do now.

Unnecessary Suffering

My flesh to you is unnecessary,

And my milk’s unnecessary for you,

So if none of these is necessary

Then my suffering’s unnecessary too.

Miss Mabel Raymonde-Hawkins

This wonderful woman, who sadly died in 1998, was a life-long advocate for animals.  She writes in her book Sensible Pets and Silly People, referring to activities with her childhood friend when she was 5 years old: “… I do not think there was any crime we would not commit for an animal.  We were always prepared to do anything we could to reduce the sufferings of any animals that came our way …”  She went on to found Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare , in the 1950s I believe, and tirelessly continued as she had begun – saving all the animals who needed her.

The day she died was a great tragedy for animals because those left in charge of Raystede have betrayed her legacy by serving meat, fish, eggs and dairy in their café – something she would never have allowed.  How do I know that?  Read this (another excerpt from her book):

“Too often our entertainment, our food, our clothing and so-called sport are all at the expense of animals and a civilised society in years to come will look back with horror at the way that we have exploited animals …. Things have gone wrong.  Things have got worse.  The sparrows go on falling.  The sheep go on suffering and it is time many more of us did much more about it … We must be less cautious, we must forge ahead with less timidity and decide that all cruelty should be punished and eliminated. …. Those of us who have grown old in the work and who have so little to encourage us for the future welfare of animals can at least hope that having carried the banner so far, we can, in falling, fling it to the hosts behind to carry on the work and hope that they will be more successful than we have been during this century.”

Heartbreakingly the hosts behind have dropped the banner and let her down horribly.

How dare they?  How dare they betray her life’s work?  How dare they betray the animals?  How dare they do it in Raystede’s name?

Every time someone signs the petition to make Raystede’s café vegan, the CEO, Nigel Mason gets an email.  Get everyone you know, and everyone you don’t know to sign it.  Even better, write to the president (who worked there when Miss Raymonde-Hawkins was there incidentally) and tell him what you think of their betrayal.  Tell him to make that café vegan!  I know I can count on you.  Thank you ❤

P is for Pig

O is for omelette

Oo

Omelette    noun

Oxford Dictionary definition:  beaten eggs fried and often folded over filling.

Our definition:  Omelettes are made from eggs laid by birds (usually chickens) kept in unnatural, confined conditions, more often than not in over-crowded barns with no access to the outside and no natural light or fresh air.  Their miserable lives are short, ending when they begin to lay less eggs at about 12 to 18 months of age (naturally, healthy chickens could live into their teens if not taken by a predator, though those rescued from chicken farms don’t usually live longer than 4 years due to their harrowing start in life).  Contrary to popular opinion, buying free range is not the cruelty free option since these birds’ lives will also end in brutal slaughter by the tender age of 18 months.  NB farms can label their eggs free range if there is access to an outdoor area from the chickens’ barn even though most of the birds in the overcrowded barn are never able to reach the door.  Male chicks are horribly killed en masse shortly after hatching.

Buying tofu, on the other hand, is the cruelty free option and if you love eggs, you’ll really love tofu 😀

N is for Nutria

Nutria    noun

Oxford Dictionary definition:  coypu fur

Our definition:   Nutria (also called coypu) are large, rodents who are more agile in the water than on land. They live in burrows, or nests, never far from the water.  Nutria may inhabit a riverbank or lakeshore, or dwell in the midst of wetlands. They are strong swimmers and can remain submerged for as long as five minutes.  Their average lifespan in the wild is eight to ten years.  They are varied eaters, most fond of aquatic plants and roots, and are very very cute.  Quite beaver-like 😀

Nutria can be rather social animals and sometimes live in large colonies, reproducing prolifically. Females have two or three litters every year, each consisting of five to seven young. These animals mature quickly and remain with their mothers for only a month or two.

Tragically, many misguided humans have cruelly exploited nutria on fur farms (“Originally native to subtropical and temperate South America, it has since been introduced to North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, primarily by fur ranchers“) and, when these ventures failed and the captive animals escaped or were released into parts of the world where they didn’t belong, they bred fast and caused a lot of damage to wetlands.  This has resulted in many attempts to cull them worldwide including, in the US, incentives being paid to people to hunt and trap them.  They get $5 per nutria tail handed in to a Coastal Environments Inc. official.

Blackfish Review

orca

We’ve just watched the fantastic documentary Blackfish and had to recommend it to everyone!  The film is shocking, moving and heart-breaking but don’t be afraid to watch it because it leaves you with a positive feeling.  A feeling that things are changing. That people are waking up to the truth that keeping animals in captivity is simply wrong.  That the lies of big companies like SeaWorld are being seen through.  Since they are dependent on being able to dupe the public into believing that their performing animals are happy in order to sell tickets, that means time is running out for them.

We are full of admiration for the people who made this film and for the many former SeaWorld trainers who spoke frankly about their own experiences there and the dishonesty of the company they worked for which of course puts money ahead of the welfare of their whales and their trainers.

Please watch this film and share it far and wide.  Knowledge is power and the more people have this knowledge, the more power we’ll have collectively to close these types of places.  SeaWorld needs bums on seats.  Let’s persuade all bums to sit elsewhere!
