Chapter 10 continued from yesterday:

โ€œBut what will I eat today?โ€ he asked, disheartened.

Luke was busy thinking.

โ€œWhat?ย  Oh, you can share mine,โ€ he said generously, and they continued on to school.

As luck would have it they wouldnโ€™t be short of food that day because class 4 was having a cookery lesson and that meant theyโ€™d all brought ingredients with them.ย  They were making scones.ย  Mrs Tebbut never allowed the boys to work together on these things and insisted on choosing their partners for them.ย  As a result, Luke found himself sharing a table with Penelope Bittern.ย  Penelope was very particular about doing things properly.

โ€œDonโ€™t put any of your stuff on my half of the table,โ€ she instructed, โ€œI canโ€™t let it contaminate my stuff.โ€

Luke was affronted.

โ€œThereโ€™s nothing wrong with my stuff,โ€ he told her, โ€œitโ€™s clean.ย  Itโ€™s new packets โ€“ havenโ€™t even bin opened โ€“ look!โ€

She lifted her arm to shield her side of the table from the sealed bag of flour he thrust towards her.

โ€œYou canโ€™t put that near my stuff!โ€ she sounded panicked.ย  โ€œI might be allergic!โ€

โ€œAllergic to what?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m allergic to raisins and kiwi fruit so โ€ฆโ€

โ€œI โ€˜avenโ€™t got no raisins or kiwis!โ€

โ€œSooo, my mum said weโ€™re playing it safe โ€™til they know for sure what else Iโ€™m allergic to.ย  Iโ€™m having tests.โ€

โ€œWell, youโ€™ve got the same stuff as me,โ€ Luke couldnโ€™t abide hypochondriac drama queens, โ€œflour, sugar, margarine โ€“ so if youโ€™re allergic to mine youโ€™re allergic to yours.โ€

โ€œBut my ingredients have been specially kept separate from things that might give me allergies โ€“ like milk, eggs, peanuts โ€“ and โ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou can be allergic to milk?โ€

โ€œYes, lots of people are, which is whyโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAnd what happens to you if you eat it, if youโ€™re allergic?โ€

โ€œWell, that depends,โ€ she was gratified he was finally listening to her. โ€œI think itโ€™s differentย for different people.ย  It depends how serious their allergy is.โ€

โ€œIt can be serious?โ€

โ€œYes.ย  Some people die if they eat something theyโ€™re allergic to.ย  Even just a tiny bit of it.ย  Even if itโ€™s so tiny you canโ€™t hardly see it.โ€

โ€œOkay, now I know youโ€™re makinโ€™ it up.ย  No oneโ€™s dyinโ€™ from a tiny bit of peanut!ย  Youโ€™re just a โ€˜ttention seekinโ€™ hypochondrian whoโ€™s makinโ€™ stuff up to get the whole table to โ€˜erself!โ€ย  That was disappointing. Luke went mentally back to the drawing board.

But Penelope wasnโ€™t finished.

โ€œThey do!ย  Their throat swells up so they canโ€™t breathe!ย  My mum told me and I think she should know โ€™cause her brotherโ€™s allergic to nuts and he has to carry a life-saver injection with him all the time in case he accidentally eats one.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€ That sounded real.ย  Penelope didnโ€™t have enough imagination to make up something as cool as that.ย  โ€œWhat other things might happen to someone who ate somethinโ€™ they were allergic to?โ€

Penelope patiently answered Lukeโ€™s endless questions and he, in return, took great care to keep his ingredients away from her half of the table.ย  By the end of the lesson Luke knew how to make Joeโ€™s mum listen.ย  The hard part, however, would be persuading Joe to do it.

***

Joe swallowed his last bite of overdone scone and made a face that suggested he wasnโ€™t enjoying it.

โ€œNot good?โ€ asked Luke.ย  His had been delicious.

โ€œWhat?ย  Oh, yeah, the sconeโ€™s good, itโ€™s your idea I donโ€™t like.โ€

โ€œDrastic times, drastic scissors,โ€ Luke reminded him, โ€œI know itโ€™s not very nice but itโ€™ll be worth it wonโ€™t it?ย  You need to make it look real or it wonโ€™t work.โ€

Joe was still reluctant.

โ€œBut I donโ€™t see why I canโ€™t just do the lentil hotpot thing.ย  I could do that.ย  And the not breathinโ€™ thing โ€“ I can hold my breath longer โ€˜n most people.โ€

โ€œYou have to show youโ€™re allergic to all three things โ€“ milk, eggs and meat โ€“ so you have to have three different allergic reactions to be convincinโ€™.ย  Jusโ€™ think yourself lucky youโ€™ve never liked fish, otherwise weโ€™d have to come up with four reactions.โ€

Joe nodded and took the bag Luke handed him.ย  Luke patted him on the back.ย  It was important to give moral support to your soldiers.

โ€œYou can do it,โ€ he said encouragingly.

Joe walked home from Lukeโ€™s house, dreading what he had to do, but determined toย do it.ย  Luke was right.ย  It would be worth it.

I love the stuff with Penelope, that’s hilarious. And so true too, that’s how children learn a lot of things, from each other. I like Luke and Joe eating their scones too, very funny ๐Ÿ˜€
