Luke Walker A.W.O.L.

โ€œHuhee ut!โ€

Joeโ€™s sixteenth funny face was not easy to maintain as it was beginning to hurt. With eyes wide, tongue sticking out and skin pulled tight around his cheek bones by his fingers, it was difficult to speak.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry!โ€ Luke said, โ€œItโ€™s not working. I pressed the button four times but it didnโ€™t take a picture.โ€

Joe retracted his tongue and massaged his face.

โ€œGis a look.โ€

Luke handed him the camera.

โ€œIt says MEMORY FULL,โ€ Joe explained, โ€œhow many pictures have you taken?โ€

โ€œI dunno,โ€ said Luke as he put Dadโ€™s camera back in his bag, โ€œare we nearly there yet?โ€

They wouldnโ€™t be there for another half an hour but the boys had already finished their packed lunches. Joe had suggested they save some for later but Luke thought it wisest to eat everything now so theyโ€™d have less to carry.

โ€œHow much longer โ€™til we get there?โ€ Luke asked no one in particular.

It really was too much to expect people to sit still for two whole hours. ย And Mrs Tebbutโ€™s insistence that the coach would not be making any stops along the way did not allow for the fact that some peopleโ€™s need to quench their thirst with a lot of lemonade might lead to other needs. He tried to think of something else.

At 11.03 the coach pulled in to Parking Zone B at Dillingsgate Zoo.

โ€œOk, class 4, pay attention!โ€ Mrs Tebbut called everyone to order. โ€œYou may leave whatever you donโ€™t need on the coach but remember that once youโ€™ve left it you wonโ€™t see it again until home time. So, if you think you might want it at any time during the day, take it with you now. ย You must stay in your allotted group, with your allotted adult, at all times. ย You must be back at the coach by 4.45 so that weย can leave promptly at 5pm. ย Ok, have a nice day everybody.โ€

Glad that his teacher had finally finished her speech, Luke hurried to the front of the coach. ย He was in Mr Edenโ€™s group, with Joe, but he couldnโ€™t line up yet because he had urgent business to attend to. ย He told Joe to tell their group to wait for him and then ran towards the zoo entrance, looking for the toilets. When he returned, six minutes later, Mrย Edenโ€™s group was not there. ย Mrs Tebbutโ€™s group was. ย Mrs Tebbutโ€™s arms were folded.

โ€œLuke Walker. What did I tell you not ten minutes ago?โ€

โ€œErm, something about if you leave it you canโ€™t have it โ€™til you go home.โ€

โ€œWhat else?โ€

โ€œCanโ€™t remember.โ€

โ€œI told you to stay in your allotted group with your allotted adult at all times.โ€

โ€œOh yeah, I know but I jusโ€™ had โ€ฆโ€

โ€œBut nothing. ย If I tell you to do something, I expect you to do it.โ€

Luke looked at his shoes. ย There was no point trying to explain about the lemonade. ย He knew that the less he said, the sooner heโ€™d be able to catch up with Joe. His mind started to wander. He wondered if heโ€™d be able to play with the monkeys; and swim with the polar bears; he wondered where the gift shop was and whether heโ€™d be able to get a souvenir pack ofย cards, or badges with animals on. ย He could certainly do with a few more badges.

โ€œLuke! Did you hear what I said? ย You will be in my group instead of Mr Edenโ€™s so that I can keep an eye on you.โ€

Lukeโ€™s eyes narrowed and his lips tightened. ย He was supposed to be in the same group as Joe. ย Theyโ€™d been looking forward to going round the zoo together. ย This was a very annoying turn of events.

Ha ha, well here is one we picked out, it’s doesn’t make a lot of sense in response to the story, but it’s great, all the same.

When I was a kid I got yelled at for going to pee. They act like what you did was unthinkable, when really, what choice do you have? You’re not supposed to do anything without asking permission, but you aren’t supposed to interrupt the teacher. So the only course of action is to pee your pants, and I think they’d get frustrated if you did that too.

They leave kids feeling bad about themselves for needing to do natural things, and for thinking for themselves. People like Luke are the good ones. If you let them mould you completely, you end up (and you do see this) you end up with adults who need spoon feeding everything, because all they know how to do is to be told what to do and obey. Without instructions they are lost. And it’s not even their fault.

Everyone should be like Luke and think for themselves.

School is the worst! They take every opportunity to suck the fun out of everything. Not to mention making children visit zoos. It’s terrible.
