Muddy face

The story continues from yesterday:

He wondered what on Earth heโ€™d done to deserve such a reception as he stood, with muddy face, muddy hands, muddy knees and muddy shoes, at the end of the trail of muddy footprints on the tiled floor.

Being considerate in all things, Luke complied with Mumโ€™s vehement suggestion that he wash more than just his hands, and came to the table in clean clothes. ย Jared, his older brother, looked at him curiously as if wondering what heโ€™d been doing and Luke returned the look without enlightening him. ย Mum served up their tea but, as usual, didnโ€™t sit down with them. ย She would wait for Dad to get home and eat with him.

Luke was dismayed to see bacon on his plate again. ย He had recently discovered what bacon really was: not food at all but slices of dead piglet. ย He was horrified. ย The fact that his parents, who had always told him to be good and kind, would choose to eat it was veryย confusing. ย He thought at first that they must not be aware of what it actually was, but when he explained it to them they were not surprised. ย They told him that people need to eat meat but that he shouldnโ€™t worry because the animals were killed humanely (which they said meant โ€˜gentlyโ€™ ). ย Luke was unconvinced.

โ€œKilled gently! So they donโ€™t mind you killinโ€™ โ€™em then, is that what youโ€™re sayinโ€™? ย They like it do they? They look forward to it I suppose because their murderers are so gentle!โ€

After some lengthy discussion in this vein, during which Lukeโ€™s parents failed to persuade him to see reason, his mum effected his silence by sternly insisting that she knew best and Luke must eat his meat. Luke said no more at that time but was determined not to.

ย Again faced with the need to be rid of his bacon, Luke discreetly took a rasher and held it below the table for Dudley. ย Dudley, his dog, very obligingly took it from him. ย At that momentย Mum reappeared in the doorway.

โ€œWhat did you just do?โ€ she demanded angrily.

โ€œWhaaat? ย Nothinโ€™. ย I dint do nothinโ€™.โ€

โ€œLuuuke.โ€

โ€œI was onโ€™y feedinโ€™ someone what was hungry,โ€ Luke explained innocently, โ€œjusโ€™ beinโ€™ generous, thatโ€™s all.โ€

โ€œYou know very well that Dudley has already had his dinner and if you keep giving him yours heโ€™s going to get fat!โ€

Dudley ate fast. ย Mum went on.

โ€œDonโ€™t ever do that again! Youโ€™re a growing boy Luke, you need to eat your meat!โ€

Luke stuck to his guns.

โ€œI donโ€™t want it! ย Iโ€™ve got Prince Pauls!โ€

Heโ€™d heard the vicar talking about living by oneโ€™sย  principles in the school assembly that morning. ย It meant having values and putting them into practice; it meant actions speak louder than words; it meant if you love animalsย you donโ€™t eat them. ย Luke had never heard of Prince Paul before but knew he must have been a good bloke.

ย โ€œPrince who? What on Earth are you on about?โ€

Mum had obviously never heard of him either.

โ€œIโ€™ve got veggietarian Prince Pauls.โ€

Mum was not impressed.

โ€œOh give me strength!โ€ she said, โ€œwell, you can explain that one to your Dad.โ€

โ€œBut he wonโ€™t be home โ€™til after bedtime right?โ€ asked Luke, hopeful that he wouldnโ€™t have to have that conversation tonight.

โ€œHeโ€™s already home. ย I just saw him walking down the garden. Checking on his lettuces no doubt.โ€

Luke, suddenly not so confident that heโ€™d thoughtย  of everything, became pale as it dawned on him that Dad might not understand that it was a good idea for the damsons toย live in the veg patch. ย He felt sure that, in time, his new friends would be welcome additions to the family, but knew that his dad was not one to take to something right away and it would be better for everyone if they did not meet just yet.

โ€œLUKE!โ€ His dadโ€™s booming voice reached the house before he did.

โ€œHow did he know it was me?โ€ Luke wondered.

It is–thanks! And I thought you’d like to know that I used ‘Prince Pauls’ in a conversation today about veganism. I think it’s a good (slightly silly) ice-breaker!

        1. You’re welcome, it’s beautiful. Ha ha ha ๐Ÿ˜€ brilliant, but how on Earth did you get Prince Pauls into the conversation?

The conversation was about how I eat and, as I was talking, I was about to say something about my principles and… well, I figured the convo would be lighter with a mention of ‘Prince Pauls’ and how I’m certain he eats like I do too. ๐Ÿ˜€ If I’d had one of your postcards with me, I would have shared it, but I did mention your site.

I know ๐Ÿ™‚ I can’t find an appropriate synonym for “interesting”. It’s not our fault – they should have come up with more when they invented our language.
