Liberia Animal Welfare and Conservation Society (LAWCS) was established in late 2001. The Society was subsequently registered and accredited under the laws of Liberia as a non-governmental organization in 2004. It is now the only local animal welfare organization in the Republic of Liberia. However, the concept of animal welfare in Liberia is still a new phenomenon. Animals were generally viewed as existing only for human needs and were treated with extreme cruelty. LAWCS was therefore considered a revolutionary initiative, which brought to the fore the need to provide care and protection for all kinds of animals, companions, farmed and wildlife and to protect their habitat.
Through proactive outreach and free general animal healthcare, LAWCS has been feeding and treating hundreds of dogs and cats during the difficult rainy season, when malnutrition and diseases strike hardest.
For many of these beloved companions, it was their very first deworming, tick and flea treatment, wound care, skin care, or vaccination. The joy in the eyes of families and the relief in their pets are living proof of the powerful impact of our supporters’ support. They are not only healing animals, they are strengthening the bond between communities, improving One Health, and spreading happiness where it`s most needed.
Because of our supporters, new communities are reaching out, eager for this life-changing support. Together, we cannot turn a blind eye, we can continue to be a blessing to both animals and people.
