Oh, yeah! Took me a couple of years of ‘ground work,’ but after a while, new guys would walk in, the Black belts would look at Shi Fu and wink, then he’s tell the guy to partner up with me for floor work, and you’d always see a look of disdain, until about the 5th time I choked the guy out. One guy, 6foot2, kept refusing to believe it, and Shi Fu comes by and tells him ‘your face is turning purple, you need to tap out, because she is not going to let go.’

I was always surprised how they assumed that they would pin me with no training whatsoever, on a mat, so there was no reason at all not to go straight to the floor for a lock. And the experienced students always found it entertaining (and my feet flying overhead when new throws were taught, too!). Personally, I was just glad to learn that sufficient skill can be enough, generally.
Wow, that is amazing! You are so cool! I always wanted to be able to do that, and tried judo for a few months, hoping that, in spite of the fact that I am not at all athletic, I would be able to learn to fight, or at least defend myself. I remember once being thrilled to have defeated a very experienced 14 year old boy, but that was my only success. Then one day my sister, who is younger but bigger and stronger than me, decided she wanted to have a go. On her first and only class I was helpless against her and that was very disheartening. She didn’t have any skill or knowledge of judo but she defeated me just because she was bigger. I gave up soon after that 😀
Well, I appreciate your compliments, but I really had no choice but to persevere (and I tried Karate, Aikido, another form of Kung Fu, and Fencing! Finally settled on Chinese Kung Fu as best for me for my size and shape): I was having debilitating panic attacks, and lost my security clearance, which threatened not only my job, but my career as I knew it at that time. I was also sick of being afraid all of the time. The Kung Fu didn’t do much, but it did teach me that I had a right to defend myself, and also how to be vigilant, since prevention is always the best medicine, and how to fall (boy, did I learn that: on my head, on my side, every which way, as the ‘demo model student’ for 2 years…)
