New fairytale The View from the Top of the Tree starts here.
“Neurons transmit electrical impulses around the body,” Ms Garlic was explaining the inner workings of the nervous system. “The sensory neurons detect things, such as temperature, the interneurons pass this information on to the motor neurons, and the motor neurons-”
It was monotonous. Class four struggled to remain awake as Ms Garlic refused to spare them any of the technical details. Luckily, Ondine had something to read.
Imogen, Paisley and Thyme were in the apple tree, eating blackberries. Sometimes grown ups walked by and implied that they probably shouldn’t be in the tree, but the girls were not affected by such suggestions, they shrieked with laughter and the grown ups went away.
You could see all kinds of things from up high, they could even see the sea. Paisley pointed out Gibraltar.
“You cannot see Gibraltar from here,” scoffed Thyme. “That’s in Spain.”
“I can see it, all the same,” Paisley replied, putting another blackberry into her mouth.
They all looked, and they all agreed that the thing they could see, out to sea, was in fact Gibraltar. Imogen didn’t actually know what Gibraltar looked like, but she decided to agree anyway.
“But it wasn’t there yesterday,” said Imogen, scratching her head.
“Perhaps it came loose, and floated away. Islands can do that, you know,” Paisley explained.
“Surely not Gibraltar,” said Thyme. “With that great big rock, it should sink like a stone.”
“It is a stone,” agreed Imogen. They all nodded.
They watched Gibraltar for a while, but it didn’t do anything interesting.
