A dependable friend

Continued from yesterday

*******

He was such a dependable friend. ย The two of them searched for almost ten minutes without any luck. Joe said the Park Keeper would probably understand if they apologised and explained what had happened but Luke wasnโ€™t ready to give up yet.

โ€œThis pavement goes downhill,โ€ he said.

โ€œNo it donโ€™t, itโ€™s flat,โ€ Joe disagreed.

โ€œGive me your ball,โ€ said Luke.

He placed it gently on the pavement and it started to roll.

โ€œSee! Itโ€™s slightly downhill. ย If we follow your ball it will lead us to mine.โ€

โ€œOk,โ€ said Joe, and they followed it.

It went past the chip shop and the laundrette; past the pub and the bingo hall. ย Joe looked back over his shoulder. ย He couldnโ€™t see the park gate anymore and was a bit worried. ย Mrs Walker had told them to

1. stay together and

2. stay in the park.

He couldnโ€™t do both so, after very little deliberation, he decided that โ€˜stay togetherโ€™ was the more important rule. ย He hurried to catch up with Luke. ย The ball continued to trickle on but was slowing down because the slope levelled out just before it reached the main road. ย Joeโ€™s ball came to a stop against a bulge in the asphalt. ย He picked it up and putย it in his pocket.

โ€œSo whereโ€™s yours?โ€

โ€œIt must be here somewhere,โ€ said Luke looking around.

His logic was flawless. ย The ball must have rolled in this direction. ย But it was nowhere to be seen.

โ€œWell at least we tried,โ€ said Joe, โ€œI think we should probโ€™ly be gettinโ€™ back to the park.โ€

โ€œJust one more minute,โ€ said Luke, โ€œI know itโ€™s here. ย It must be.โ€ ย Suddenly he realised โ€œsomeone probโ€™ly accidentโ€™ly kicked it. ย Itโ€™s probโ€™ly gone across the road!โ€

โ€œOh no!โ€ said Joe as he looked at the busy traffic, โ€œweโ€™re not goinโ€™ to cross the road!โ€

Oh this is so well written! The excitement and the danger, the guilt and the analysis of the rules you have been given. They are so brave ๐Ÿ™‚
