The Sustrans website will tell you all about the National Cycle Network in the UK which “is a series of traffic-free paths and quiet, on-road cycling and walking routes, that connect to every major town and city.  The Network passes within a mile of half of all UK homes and stretches over 14,000 miles across the UK.”

They also have a shop where you can buy maps, books, clothes and accessories etc, although you might have a good cycle shop in your own neighbourhood where you can get everything you need; or, even better, check out the second hand shops and the shops of animal-friendly charities and re-use something someone else doesn’t need any more (for a fraction of the price).

I had the Sustrans poster map when I lived in the UK. I bet they’ve added loads more tracks since then (over 15 years ago). I used the track from Bath to Bristol once. Most of it was well away from traffic, was scenic and good exercise. 🙂 Took my son on it too a few times but we didn’t get far because he was a toddler then and we had to carry him most of the time.
Just had a look at the web-site – it looks really good. Very useful.

Yeah, it makes you want to get on ya bike doesn’t it? Problem is there’s just too much traffic for it to be safe on normal roads so I hope the cycle network continues to expand so that it is within half a mile of every household 🙂

Yeah, that’s the main problem – getting onto the tracks in the first place. We didn’t use ours very often because we had to drive to Bath first. How far is the nearest one to you?
It would be great if the network expanded enough for people to do their commute to work. In the last place I worked at they had showers so I was able to cycle in without being sweaty all day. The route proved to be a bit dangerous though so I didn’t do it for long.

I know what you mean, the nearest one to us is about 10 miles away, but we continue to hope that the off-road paths will keep extending out this way and, as you say, in every direction 🙂

10 miles – so near and yet so far. I hope they extend your way soon. 🙂
