Vegan Children’s Book – Arktel: The Planet Only Children Could Save

Find out more at http://www.planetarktel.com/About_the_book.html

Arktel: The planet only children could save is a beautifully illustrated book by Menkit Prince.

It’s about three planets: Tarjez, Arktel and Earth. On planet Tarjez, we fast forward to what could happen if we keep going the way we are on Earth i.e. total destruction.

Children from Arktel witnessed the destruction of Tarjez and decided to take action because they saw similar trends happening in their world that could lead to Arktel’s destruction.

The Arktel website is not only about the book but also about how children here can save our planet.  It’s honest and straight-forward as well as being a brilliant educational resource for children, their carers  and their teachers.  It’s a heavy subject but unless we look it straight in the eye and acknowledge the crisis we are facing, we will never overcome it.  This book and its associated website challenges us not to get depressed but to do something about it.

Strawberries

I AM VEGAN

I AM VEGAN

5 Reasons Strawberries Are Good For You

1.  They are high in antioxidants.  They’re rated the fourth highest in antioxidants out of all the fruits, only to be beaten by blackberries, cranberries and raspberries.  Antioxidants play a role in keeping our cardiovascular system in tip top shape

2.  They’re a great source of vitamin C, which plays a large part in keeping our immune system strong and healthy. Vitamin C can also help fight stress.

3.  Strawberries contain magnesium, a mineral that helps our body produce energy and maintain strong bones and healthy teeth.

4.  Because they contain potassium, strawberries can help your muscles and nerves function properly, lower your risk of high blood pressure and can help your body maintain healthy electrolyte levels.

5.  Given their high antioxidant and anti inflammatory benefits, strawberries are considered a cancer-fighting food.

Oooh, can’t wait til summer – bring on the strawberries! 🙂

NEW Vegan Comic for Boys coming soon!

We already have a popular vegan comic for girls but here at Violet’s Veg*n e-Comics we don’t want the boys to feel left out so I have enlisted the help of six-year-old twin boys, Thomas and Elliot Thacker to help me with feedback on the creation of a new comic for boys.  Thomas and Elliot came up with the excellent name of Luke Walker for the hero of this new series of stories.

LW title

8 year old Luke Walker is a determined young man who won’t let a simple thing like doing as he’s told prevent him from helping animals.

The Star by Ute Blaich and Julie Litty

I have just come across this beautiful book at our local library and wanted to tell you about it.  The illustrations are stunningly gorgeous and the honesty of the story is so refreshing and heart warming.  Here are a few snippets ….

At this time of year when many of us are heart-broken in the knowledge that most people will celebrate the season of goodwill by taking the life of an innocent, it is so refreshing to find a story for children which, in spite of its honesty, fills us with hope.  Read it all to see what I mean.  Here it is

Home Made Vegan Monopoly

monopoly instructions 1

Cut out a large square of cardboard from your cereal box or whatever and draw a line inside the outer edge to create a border. Then divide the border into squares like this. A traditional Monopoly board has 40 evenly-sized squares altogether, like this one, but if you want you can have a random number of different-sized squares. It's up to you!

Each square represents a place, so think about places in your town, or places you wish were in your town and put them in - include places like veggie/vegan cafes and shops like 'The Loving Hut' and 'Infinity Foods' in this one, and place you enjoy going to like the cinema, the park and the pier. Don't forget to put 'GO' in one corner and a few 'chance' squares. The original Monopoly also has fines on some squares like 'income tax' but you can make up your own like we have with 'bus fare' and 'new shoes'. Just free your imagination and run with it!

You need play money for monopoly so you can make some fake paper money or you can make coins. We made coins by finding whatever coins we had lying around and making rubbings of them with our crayons. Then we stuck them on cardboard and cut them out - or the other way around but that's twice as much cutting - it's up to you!

We found an odd assortment of coins including a commemorative £5 coin and an out of date ha'penny - anything goes when you're making it up yourself!

Now that you've finished your board and you know what each place is, you need to make property cards - one for each place (don't include fines/go/free parking/free cup of tea and the like)

Now that you’ve finished your board and you know what each place is, you need to make property cards – one for each place (don’t include fines/go/free parking/free cup of tea and the like). You need to decide on a purchase price for each place and a landing fine to be charged to other players that land on it. Bear in mind what denominations of money you’ve made when you decide on prices but don’t be too serious about it – we went crazy and our landing fines were often higher than the purchase prices! Just have fun with it.

There are also in Monopoly 'Community Chest' and 'Chance' cards. Your game doesn't have to have these but it's good to have some kind of 'chance' spaces around your board (as indicated earlier) which you can give any name you like. In our game these spaces are called 'Family Treasure' and '?'. Now you need to make cards for players to pick up if they land on these spaces. You can write something good or something bad on these cards (for eg the player has won something, or has to pay something) - but again, just use your imagination, it can be anything you want.
