Think To Question

we need cows' milk for calcium

It’s right to listen to teachers

When they tell a new fact to you,

But still you can keep an open mind

To consider if it’s true.

we need to eat meat for protein

They say it is because they think it is,

But sometimes they’re mistaken.

Someone told them a long time ago

And they didn’t think to question.

humans are herbivores

My boys fortunately now have a bit more awareness and now find it rather odd why the teacher would teach them things that are wrong! And of course Violet, you always set the record straight in such an engaging way. Thank you as always xxx

Thank you 🙂 My daughter remembers when she was about 7, her teacher was telling the class that they were omnivores and she told him that she only eats plant food. The teacher said “yes you do, but we’re supposed to eat meat, that’s why we have canines.” My daughter didn’t doubt herself but was upset and embarrassed at the teacher’s dismissive response in front of the class and, at only 7 years old, didn’t feel able to argue the point. It’s very hard for children when they are under the authority of a teacher who they know is wrong. I write things like this not to push them into battles with their teachers, but just to reassure them that they are right, whatever the teacher says.

Inspiring read Violet and it got me to really thinking how we learned in school and how it could have been different !

Reblogged this on aromaticcoffees and commented:
Great article! Encourage questioning – and empower teachers to allow discussion, be strong enough to listen and take on board their pupils’ thoughts and opinions and admit when they get it wrong. One of the strongest tools to gaining respect from pupils is,
“Oops, my mistake. Well done – you were right!”
