Yes they do – but as a society we are addicted to them. Here in South Australia the shop no longer “supply” plastic bags, but you can buy them with your shopping and who really worries about an extra 10 cents on the bill.

  I know it’s stupid, but at least your shops are trying to make people think. Supermarkets here just push bags on people, encouraging them to take one. The staff are required to say “would you like a bag?”. I think they should say “Did you bring your own bag?” instead. That would force people to say “no, sorry” if they didn’t bring one and might make them think next time. That’s not to mention plastic bags for produce – people will take a bag just to put one onion in!!!

    You can buy a canvas bag for $1 and these last for years. A lot of people buy them and use them for their fortnightly shopping – just like the shopping bags our mothers used. My wife has a few of those, which go in the car on shopping day.
