Toxic Waste

EVE PICKED THESE UP IN 20 MINUTES AT THE LOCAL PARK

It is estimated that several trillion cigarette butts are littered worldwide every year.  That’s billions of cigarettes flicked, one at a time, on our sidewalks, beaches, nature trails, gardens, and other public places every single day.  In fact, cigarettes are the most littered item in the world.  Maybe it’s because people think they’re made of harmless biodegradable material,

BUT THEY’RE NOT!!

Cigarette filters are made of cellulose acetate tow (plastic fibers) and they can take decades to degrade. Not only does cigarette litter ruin even the most picturesque setting, but the toxic residue in cigarette filters is damaging to the environment and the animals that mistake them for food.  The filter is specifically designed to trap toxic chemicals (to stop the smoker sucking them in) and when they’re discarded, these toxins leak into the environment (and the bodies of those who eat them).

  1. One more reason to hate smokers…
Their weird and disgusting behavior reminds me that theyre drug addicts looking for pleasure, it must be bothersome for most of them to clean their own mess when theyre in the middle of their “happy time”.
Ok, done ranting as well 😛

  2. I still see people empty car ashtrays out of their window or just flick their butts and garbage out the same way. What is WRONG with them. I feel like picking it up and shoving it back at them. The world is their garbage dump.

  3. Urgh, this is infuriating. I was explaining this to a coworker the other day, she happens to be the ONLY smoker in our entire workplace. I said, what do you think happens to these cigarette butts that you so complacently flick on the ground? Her response, what else am I supposed to do with it.
Not my problem, nor mother earth’s! Be responsible! You want to kill yourself by smoking, put it out and carry that stinky thing to a garbage bin. My son has picked up butts off the ground asking me what they are. It’s disgusting and thoughtless.
    Ok – done ranting 😉
